I would like to announce the release of my new book: Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting.

As an avid shooter and student of ballistics, I've always wanted to write a book that explains the complex elements of ballistics in my own words. However, simply re-wording information wasn't good enough. I wanted to make an original contribution to the shooting sports.

How many times have we heard it said that: "Someone needs to test all these bullets from the different brands so we can compare apples-to-apples"? This call for independent testing is what I set out to answer. I began the development of my procedure and equipment for testing BCs over 2 years ago, long before I became the Chief Ballistician for Berger. The method I developed to measure BCs for all 175 of the bullets in this book is accurate (repeatable) within +/- 1%, and is the same method I use to measure Berger's BCs today.

The book is hardcover, 537 pages, and has 3 major parts:

Part 1 is a discussion of what I call "The Elements" of external ballistics. This part has an entire chapter on each of the important fundamental aspects of ballistics including: ballistic coefficient (BC), gravity drop, wind deflection, uphill/downhill shooting, gyroscopic (spin) drift, coriolis effect, ballistics programs, sights, and bullet stability.

Part 2 presents some examples of how to use the elements of ballistics to perform meaningful analysis for various applications including: target shooting (prone, F-class and Benchrest), tactical shooting, and long range hunting.

Part 3 presents my original contribution to the shooting sports: ballistic test data (drag and BCs) for over 175 long range bullets from .22 to .338 caliber from all major brands.

Applied Ballistics for Long Range shooting
comes with a CD containing a modern ballistics program. Chapter 5 presents an experiment where the program is used with G7 BCs to predict trajectories that match actual drop to within 1" at 1000 yards for two different calibers.

The books are currently being printed, and will be available to deliver by July 1st. I'm now taking pre-orders on my website: Book

Thank you for your interest,
-Bryan

Bryan,

Congrats on the book, that is a big undertaking and you should be proud of your accomplishment.

Can you post a list of the projectiles that you cover in detail in the book?

Thanks,
AJ

Jeff,
No, the program is for PC only.
I have to say the program is pretty bare bones. There are two reasons for this;
1. My programming ability is novice for the moment, and I frankly lack the ability to code sophisticated features and graphics (but I'm working on it).
2. I wanted the program to be 'minimal' so that the focus remained on the fundamentals; the things that actually affect the trajectory. There is certainly a place for software that marries ballistics with sights, but my intent was to focus on generating accurate ballistics only.

AJ,
Here is a list of the projectiles:

jMason,
You shouldn't have a problem understanding it. I tried very hard to convey the ideas in plain language, violating known and unknown rules of grammar that would have my english teachers steaming! It's usually easier to communicate complex ideas with conversational language, not bound by the rules of grammar.

-Bryan

I was given the priveledge of reading Bryan's book before it was published. One of the things I admire most about Bryan is his ability to communicate complex technical ideas with an easy to understand delivery.

I believe those who read this book will be surprised that there are many external ballistics concept that are not as mysterious as they seem once they are explaind in simple language.

All the BCs listed for nearly every popular size and brand having been tested by one capable source is a huge resource. However, I truly believe that many shooters will be able to use information from the rest of Bryan's book to improve their shooting experience.

Bryan did a great job.

Regards,
Eric

Congratulations Bryan,

Well done on the book.

Im in for one, always happy to support members from this site!!!!

Just sent off my order from your web site! Hope to be the first shooter in Australia to get a copy.:)

Got mine yesterday in the mail! 1st observations:

1. It smells good
2. lots of pics (my favorite kind)
3. Bryan won't be that skinny forever:D

Have very much enjoyed the first few pages which have helped fill in some holes in my understanding. Have a long ways to go and expect my understanding to increase a great deal. Well worth it. Thanks, Bryan. Jon
