New 7mm cartridge from Federal

Your forgetting Federals first try, the mighty 338 Federal. You remember, 308 performance with twice the recoil. You Can still find ammo for that one cause the first box that ever hit any store shelves is still there. Federal does have some of the very best factory ammo options, but maybe cartridge development should be left to ANYONE else.

I know a couple guys that bought them. I think it's was more for collector value because I don't think either actually uses them. They are both big 338 guys.

Overall, I get what Federal is doing, but I have some reservations about being convinced that it's a sure winner that'll be around for the long haul.

Foremost would be the trend of going smaller that seems to be taking hold in shooting and hunting circles. A lot of folks realized that they don't necessarily need large bullets at "magnum" velocities to effectively kill game, even at longer ranges. Similarly, not too long ago max velocity extended MPBR, making it easier to hit accurately at longer, estimated distances. With LRF's and reliable dialing scopes, velocity doesn't count for as much. As such, it seems the new BC is maybe 10- 15 years behind the curve, which, in all honesty, and as much as I love .284's, the 7 PRC is also suffering a little from; that level of performance with bullets of that size is just more than most situations need most of the time.

There's the cost and availability factor. If there's only one source for ammo and it's pricy and it cant yet be easily reloaded, it's not going to be attractive to a lot of higher volume shooters. Likewise, if the reloading process and accessories are proprietary, I can't see a lot of hand loaders being quick to switch over to gain a bit of velocity that may or may not actually make a difference in r eal world outcomes.

And then there's the fact that many gun owners, myself included, have recently bought one or several of the PRC's, ARC's, Dashers, 6 CM's, etc., which had been the latest in cartridge design to this point. I suspect that many won't be so fast to get something that's only marginally different in performance, even if it gets to the same end point by what turns out to be a better route.

I have more concerns, but I'm out of time!

I didn't know they weren't good enough, but they weren't either, apparently. That's what they told me. I needed them with faster twists and longer bullets and heavier weights.

So imagine my relief to get the Creedmore's and the PRCs.

Then there were fewer 22-250s and .243s and 257s and 6.5x55s and 270s and 7RMs and 3006s and 300WMs and 338WMs and RUMs and WSMs and WSSMs and SAUMs guns and ammo available 'cause the machinery and the racks and the shelves only have so much capacity.

I didn't know they weren't good enough, but they weren't either, apparently. Now that's what they tell me. I need them with shorter barrels.

So imagine my relief now to get the Backcountry(ies).

Meanwhile at my LGS, the options for types and prices and weights or any at all for 22-250 the .243 the 257 the 6.5x55 the 270 the 7RM the 3006 the 300WM the 338WM the WSM the WSSM the SAUM are getting pretty slim.

I wonder what I'll need next?

You make a great point, but. There are diamonds that come from each generation. Funny thing is Roy had it all figured out by the mid 60s with diamonds in every caliber with the exception of a 6.5 and a better .224. Especially with todays powders his case capacities are the sweet spot for all his originals. IMHO.
