New. 1949 Winchester. Model 70 300 H and H

One of my favorite guns is the pre 64 in 300 H&H. My grandpa gifted me his as my first gun. Fun and smooth to shoot.
How much do you weigh to have a 300 H&H be "fun" to shoot
don't they kick a lot more than a 30-06???

I know the 300 weatherby uses like 72.0gr of powder where the 06 uses approx 59.0

Hi boys.and thank you all very much. I found a Redfield One Peice JR mount still in the box ! The label says for model 70 300 and 375 H and H ! It's a 51114 part number ! It's for serial number above 66,xxx!! Mike is 108,xxx It should get here in a few days ! The Pre 64 Boyd's Walnut stock came tonight ! As expected a slight gap at the rear tang . Im going to have this second stock bedded to the action and it will be the hunting stock ! Nice high straight comb ! Nice shape for a used pre 64 wood stock . I paid 200 dollars !! I will keep the 1949 Model 70 original stock , un touched ! I thank you all for all the advice !!

Believe it or not, my 30-06 feels like it kicks harder than my H&H. The physics do not make sense at all. Maybe the recoil on my 30-06 is sharper or the long tapered cartridge of the H&H helps smooth it out, I'm not really sure why or how. I was a very skinny 125lb when I first started shooting the H&H off the bench and fell in love with the gun. Now I'm shooting 71gr of RL 22 behind a 180gr AB and it is snappier than the factory loads I was shooting, but still a very smooth gun.

Your right about recoil! The drop at the comb on the factory stock in a great deal more then an the after market stock ! According to two experts on the subject. Winchester did not seriously consider the use of rifle scope till about 1953 -1955. Then the comb height changed ! This was after my 1948 1948 transition model was discontinued ! One could always add a leather comb and cheek riser to compensate if shooting the original stock !

I am glad you found the base. I was going to say Leupold made one as well. Enjoy it
