Need Some Help On A Cartridge

I am putting together a long distance(300 to 600 yard) ground hog rig. I have a Savage 12FVSS in 300 WSM that I just restocked. I want to use this platform for my new rifle. Here is the problem. The 300 WSM is shooting .25 inch three shot groups with a 155 grain bullet. The second part of the problem is that my AR has ruined me-the AR has allowed me to see impacts and I really like that. The third part of the problem is that whatever I do to the 300WSM barrel I will not be able to see impacts(and the 300 WSM is a little large for ground hog's). I have posted a MB post on a couple of sites-and the consensus is that I will not be able to see impact's.

I was going to re-barrel the 12FVSS to a hot 22 or 6mm cartridge. The problem is that would require a different bolt face. Now I know that the bolt face can be changed, but then I would loose the ability to put the 300 WSM barrel back on as a switch rig.

Now my question. What cartridge can I rebarrel to that will allow me to leave the rifle as a switch barrel rig, and use the same boltface?? I want a hot fast cartridge for a varmint rig?? I will be putting a brake on the barrel, and I want to be able to see impact's?? This may not be possible, but if it is possible I am sure one of you guy's would know about it. Thanks, Tom.

just my 2 cents, I would keep the 300wsm barrel, u know as soon as u change or get rid of it you'll need it for a hunting trip. (besides it sounds like it shoots well,) Since u have a Savage and u mentioned switch-barrel, I honestly would say get a Pre-Fit Barrel from Sharp Shooter Supply in say 6br 1-8(heavy bullets) or 1-10twist(lighter varmint bullets) u mentioned ranges in 300-600yd, and this caliber covers that and proves to be very accurate to those ranges. And u can get a replacement bolt face Sharp Shooter Supply - The Savage Specialists I think in the end, ur goona spend a tad more, however you'll have 2 calibers to choose from!!

Next step u wanted is to watch bullet impact, go heavy with the barrel and would suggest a brake from 308nate.

Another suggestion for watching bullet impact would say, look at some of the 20 caliber wilcats out there. I'm shooting the 20 TAC and I can watch the mini's I shoot at 400yd explode off the board. There are some real hot-rod 20's out there that can really perform well out to 600+ and the gun will move with little retort.

the 6.5-300wsm is a fairly popular wildcat and there is a 6-300wsm out there. I have read that there is some problem with burning barrels up and necking down cartridges for this one but you may want to look into it. You should ask around if the dimensions of the 300wsm and the wssm cartidges are close enough to use the same bolt face. the only difference is the rim on the wssm is .04" and the wsm is .054". just a thought.

or since it's a Savage you can swap bolt heads back and fourth when you switch barrels and pick whatever short action ctg. you want.

What about leaving the gun the way it is, since it seems to shoot well. Try the 110 V-MAX. Out of a 300 win mag we get to about 3900-4000 fps before the bullet comes apart on a 1 and 10. Just a thought. On lighter loads the recoil is very manageable, just need good shoulder pressure. BTW the 110 Explodes vary well on target.

buy another bolt. buy a 6mm br in 1-10 twist for the 75 or 87 VMAX or 95 SMK

put a holland brake and a pachmeyer decelerator pad on the 300 wsm and you'll see the impacts. I have an 8.5# 7mm STW and can watch impacts through a 20x scope on deer at 500 yds.
