Need help with a 338RUM

Marriedman,

My HS Precision 338RUM shoots 210 Barnes TSX's (93grn RL25, fed 215s) very well. They may not be the best in the BC catagory but they shoot well. I could not get it shoot good at all with the Scirroccos. If you are interested in a heavier bullet try the 250 SMK.

RDM416,

What kind of velocity and accuracy are you getting with
RL-25 and the 210 gr bullet?

JD338,

I am getting 3250fps with the 93grn of RL25. My rifle has a 28" barrel. Groups at 100 are in the 1/2" range.

I might be able to squeeze a little more speed and possibly a little better groups by taking the time to play with more. I bought this rifle specifically for a sheep hunt I went on in 05. It was late coming in and I had 3 days to get a load worked up for it. I tried the Scirocco's and they did not shoot good (1 1/2" groups), tried the 210TSX and they were acceptable, so I loaded up a bunch and went on the hunt.

I have two 338 Kahn's that Kirby built for me. When it is time to go hunting one of those is what I reach for. As a consequence the RUM has gotten very little attention. One of these days I will do another serious mountain hunt where I want the lighter rifle and will get the RUM tweaked in. But until then it shoots plenty well for blasting yote's out the back door /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

RDM416,

Thanks for the G2.
I have some good load data for 200, 210, 225 and 250 gr loads. Let me know when you are ready and I will pass the load data on to you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

338 RUM Load Data

Here are the loads that I am using in my M700 LSS 338 RUM w/ a Leupold VXIII 2.5x8 scope. I am using R-P brass and Federal GM215M primers.

200 gr BT
RL22 90.0 grs
best 3 shot group @ 100 yds .325"

200 gr AB
RL22 92.0 grs
best 3 shot group at 420 yds 2.265" (2 shots were .507")

210 gr PT
RL22 92.0 grs
best 4 shot group @ 100 yds .425"
best 3 shot group @ 300 yds 1.285" (2 shots were .590")

225 gr PT
RL22 90.5 grs
best 3 shot group @ 100 yds .450"

225 gr AB
RL25 96.0 grs
best 3 shot group @ 100 yds .567"

250 gr PT
RL25 90.0 grs
best 4 shot group @ 100 yds .490"

COL is 3.665" which is just under maxium magazine dimensions.

JD338,
Thanks for sending your data on the RUM. I'm printing the page now to put with my loading data for reference when I start playing with the RUM again. You are probabably get quite a bit more speed out of the 210s since you are using almost as much RL22 as I am RL25.

I will probably go with the heavier bullets though. After much prodding from guys who know a lot more about this long range stuff than I, I have fianaly gotten off the speed freak bandwagon and started using heavy bullets.

Richard (Wildcat bullets) is finaly back on line with .338 cal bullets. I have some 325s, and 300s coming in from him. He is also now making 350s and 375s for .338. I think I'll order some of those to play with as well.

RDM416,

Glad to help. Those Wildcat bullets intrigue me. Any load data you can share would be greatly appreciated.

JD338,

I have not shot any of his bullets yet. As soon as I get these in that I have ordered and get some range results I will post my findings

what are you doing for case prep? Are you sorting by weight? Primer pockets done in and out? Turning case necks? Full length sizing or neck sizing?
