My salt bath annealing

Very interesting. I would think using a PID to control the salt temperature even better would be a good addition to the melting pot.

I tried annealing with the traditional way (torching) but rather then taking a chance of over heating the entire case etc. I discard all of my Lapua brass after the 3rd loading. Better safe then sorry.

Which cases are you discarding? I might could use them for " test" purposes..

Tried to order this kit last week. The guy is experiencing a large increase in orders and can't keep up. So your wait time might be a bit long. I ordered the salt elsewhere and will make my own holder for the shells.
I'm excited to get going on this. Tired of the torch and templaq method, and I can't afford $500 to $1500 for one of the fancy units. Brass is getting too expensive and hard to get to waste it by improper annealing.

I bought some Lapua cases that were annealed just like that.

Annealing is necessary in the neck, neck shoulder junction, shoulder and the shoulder case body junction. so I would make sure that these areas are submerged in the bath by at least 1/8th of an inch.

This would guarantee that the necessary areas would be annealed. I like the color transformation to reach about 1/4 inch below the shoulder body junction. the start of this color difference should be at least 1/8th inch from the shoulder body junction and indicates where the annealing stops.

More is not necessary and may be detrimental.

I would also like to know a source of salt for this process. The website said they will not air ship the product so getting it up to AK is a problem.

I got my kit all together last week. Opted for a better pot for other reasons, but went with the RCBS EasyMelt pot. Has PID control built in, nice large capacity to avoid cooling too much when running a large batch fast. I got my salt from these guys...

You get more than you need, but then you'll have plenty of extra. $lbs of salt was like 32 or 36 bucks shipped. I'll make my shell holders from plywood,and then off to the races. can't wait to use it. I tested the melter and it'll hold the temp of lead very consistently, so I have no worries about the salt.
