My mission to find the best short barreled big 338!!!

At some point the intangibles start to become the controlling Factor. If I were to do another shorty it would probably be somewhere in the moderate Magnum range. 7 prc up to 28 nosler, as opposed to 7 rum or 7-338 lap.

In a long barreled rig I'd be back to bigger powder columns.

Looking at elk hunter 338s ethos on this rifle it's "best" within moderate parameters. I like it, norma improved still fits in a relatively common (lapua bf actions are far more plentiful than chey tac) actions and works within relatively normal barrel/stock/bottom metal realm. Gues it would be analogous to the heaviest hauling one ton truck vs. Putting a bed on a f750. That next step up to chey tac is just a lot more that's a hard sell in a shorty tube.

Finishing up some sub caliber builds and need to do a mid bore boomer next. But next year its big bore build time, I've always like the idea of a Norma, maybe a short build norma improved is just about perfect.
Funny you say that. I just got in two barrels a 22" and a 20" barrel in MTU carbon's that I'm going to make shorty's in 28 Nosler and one in 7prc. The 20" will be a 7prc and the 22" at 28 nosler.

What velocity would you expect out of those? Sounds like a great set up.
7prc w/ 180's around 2,900 and 195's around 2,800 or so

28 nosler w/ 180's 3,080 and 195's around 3,000 or so.

Atleast that's what I'm shooting for. I'll know more after I chamber and shoot my pressures.

Doing a 30 nosler in a 22" also and a 338 Norma Improved 40 deg shoulders at 22" also. All MTU CF barrels.

I have a 24" carbon barrel 338 Rum that is sending the 250 gr bergers @ 2997 ft.per.sec. with Re-26
It is a heck of alot easier to handle hunting then my 30 " 338 !
I'm going to try nv -570 & 300 gr bergers next ..

Rum Man
I've been watching your results and this performance is why I'm building a 23" 338 RUM. Planning on a hammer HHT in the 230-250 grain weight. I even have R26!

Nah bra…August fools…all us be like tryin to get our huntin chit in order..dudes be like, I threw all my Reloader 26 in da garden.
One man's trashy fertilizer is another man's treasure. Been look for RL26 for a couple of years!😂
