My first elk hunt

Hammers have better terminal characteristics than the Barnes and typically get you higher velocities. You may be able to go heavier depending on your twist rate, but speed is your friend here. As long as your impact velocity is 1,800 or greater, you'll be happy with the results of the Hammers. My 6.5x284 spinning 124 Hammers kills just as good as my 7LRM pushing 169 Hammers. If anything the little 124 gr pill does it better because they are faster. ;) I never cease to be amazed at the potency of that little 124 HH.

I'm supposing you reload?

The 6.5 CM will run a 124 HH around 3,000 fps (need 8 twist or faster), which will get you well past 500 yd for terminal effectiveness. The 308 pushing 152 gr Hammers (12 twist or faster) at 3,000 fps (if you can), will also get you to 500 yd, but the 6.5 Creed and the smaller bullet has the edge in terminal effectiveness due to sectional density and higher retained velocity at those ranges (higher BC). Either will get the job done from 0 - 500 yd. All you got to worry about is doing your part to get it where it belongs.

For factory loads, my recommendation would be to go with a Barnes load or the Federal Terminal Ascent or Trophy Bonded Tip, whichever it shoots the best.

I need to give those hammers a shot. Was really interested in the Cutting Edge Lasers too until I saw how fast a twist rate they require.

Yeah, go for it. Took me a little to get used to moving down from the high BC heavies too. They certainly have their place, but I've been nothing but impressed with what the Hammers have done for me. Another option is the Badlands Bulldozer line.

I have the 178 Cayuga and 175 BD2 for my .30 Gibbs. Good luck!
Feenix, what velocity are you getting out of both in your Gibbs? I've been tempted to try some Cayuga's too. Running some BD-2's in 2 rifles this year waiting to try on big game for terminal results before making a judgement.

Are they both easy to load and consistently accurate?

Sorry, I have yet to try them due to recent shoulder surgery, but I am pushing the 190 Berger VLDs at 2806 FPS (https://www.longrangehunting.com/threads/30-gibbs-is-finally-ready.242088/page-11) with more room to spare. It is driving me nuts, but I normally do load development around the September time frame anyways. My best WAG is ~3K+ FPS.

I also have 117 Cayuga for my .257 WBTY and 125 BD2 for the 6.5 CM.

Gonna be all over those Cayugas.

Well good man, I really wish you well in the surgery recovery. I'm sure you're stirring for some shooting fun again, but taking time to heal will make it all the better. Will be waiting on all the reports. ;)

I had my first PT yesterday, and the initial evaluation is that I am close to the normal range of motion already, but they are going to baby it to allow the massive repair time to heal. I will definitely share range reports.
