Muffs for hearing loss?

I have severe to moderate hearing loss. There are muffs that have built-in microphones so we can hear other people. However if they amplify for people with "normal" hearing may not amplify a person who has loss.

Obviously these muffs shut off sound in milliseconds as a gun goes off.

I try to wear muffs over my hearing aids (Behind the ear aids) but are uncomfortable.

Does anyone know about muffs that are amplified for people with hearing loss?

It may be difficult to determine which over-the-head muffs provide the highest level of amplification because you normally don't see that spec. The best solution may be to convert to in-the-ear aids and then just use quality muffs with amplification.

I use Sordin Pros which are excellent, but I don't need them in conjunction with aids.

I like your idea. Get some in the ear aids. Problem is I had those before and were not strong enough for me to hear using only those. But a combination of those with high quality muffs, may just be the trick.

I looked up the Sordin Pro Extreme and look great. I may order one and try them out. I use Amazon for about everything. Great return policy if needed.

Hopefully someone else may recommend muffs with greater volume.

I have moderate loss and the muffs with amplification work well with no hearing aids. Most of the in the ear protection I have tried/used does not have enough amplification. Currently use Axil 2.0 so I use both in combination when shooting (steel). Or just the Axil when I'm on RSO duty unless someone brings out a 338L or 416.

Here's the funny thing about Sordin's warrantee:

If the unit breaks (mine developed a battery contact issue) you have to mail them back to Sordin in Sweden! I did it and it was actually much faster and easier than expected. Sordin will send you all the forms for an international shipment.

They work great.....I still use foam plugs plus the muffs, to help maintain what hearing I have left.

I like these! Don't like to hunt with ear muffs. These may be my answer. I just sent them an email and expressed my hearing loss and IF they don't work out for me, do they have a return policy.

I always take out my hearing aids when shooting. There's no point of having them in.

I purchased a good set of muffs with volume control from Brownells a long time ago and after a couple of years they stopped working. Brownells guarantees the products they sell. I returned them and they sent me a new pair that I still use today. I believe Brownells still offers the same guarantee. If your going with another set of muffs, I would start looking there.

I recently went with a set of custom molded hearing protection. There's many different types of these on the market at many different prices ranges. You can hear people talking and they shut down when there's a loud noise. I got my from Vanderbilt hospital where I see my ENT doctor. They were cheaper from the hospital than some of the other venders on the market. The injection molded style are really good. I wish I would have gotten them years ago.

If someone is shooting next to me with a big boomer or muzzle brake, I put my muffs on over the other ones.

Walkers electronic muffs work good enough for me....I'm 90% deaf and 10+ in tinnitus ringing.....so actually 95% deaf...
The ringing sucks.....
But keeping hearing aids on 'under the muffs' makes no sense....if anything take the foam plugs..cut at an angle long direction in half....roll them thin then insert into the ear canal....
Save what little you have.....
Ears definitely have a 'shelf life'

60% hearing loss in my right ear from when I was a young boy. I have used the MSA Sordin Supremes for a while now and can confirm the audio enhancement does still work for me. Frankly, I hear better with the head set on than without. Does an excellent job at filtering out gunshots. Crystal clear voices and muffled thuds. Spendy, but worth it. I have the walkers too, you can't even compare them.

Edit: not sure where you are at career-wise or if you have an HSA, but a nice option you may be able to exercise is to go see your audiologist and get custom, in ear peltors or sordins and use your pre tax HSA money to cover them.

They are military spec. A lot of them are com capable.

Past that, look at the decibel reduction ratings, and the noise amplification.


In the OPs case, Peltor comtacs can be adjusted for single side hearing loss. There's a lot of tech inside, but again, these are for military/police/industrial use.

I use mine with a hearing aid, but to hear others talking and com chatter. The hearing aid is a rexton. That said, on the comtac 5s, most noise traffic I can hear without the aid.
