Ok for all that wanted some more information on the 45-70 that I built here you go. I started with the reading of an article about the 45-70 Sandy Hook Trials in 2015 and was amazed what they had achieved, so I decided to look in to building a rifle that would be designed on the same parameters as the guns in the trials. This led me to finding the DeHass book and I read it front to back 2 times then decided on building the FM Vault Lock 2 in the book, I studied the plans for around 2 months and finally figured I was ready to give the build a go. I started by looing for metal sources and bought all of the metal except the block for the receiver . I started doing some figuring on the sizing for the strength of the receiver, I wanted it to be strong enough for a magnum. I ordered the block of 4140 pre hard steel. Then for the barrel that was a real journey trying to find a 3 groove 1-18 twist, finally settled on a 6 groove 1-18 twist magnum contour unchambered unthreaded barrel from McGowan. I got everything together and started building in May of 2017 and finished it in October of 2017 all except for the engraving it would take me until June of 2021 to find the design that I wanted for the engraving. I have had a good time building the firearm it has been very rewarding especially after taking the deer with it this year. I hope this was a good enough explanation of the building of the firearm if there are any questions I would be glad to try to answer them, Thanks for reading.

Ray

Can you share the title of the book you found the plans in? I've been looking for a set of plans to do something like this, and I see at least 3 books on single shots with DeHass's name.

One question:
If you build your own firearm from scratch; what is required from the ATF or others?
Barring any state laws or NFA items, nothing. You can manufacture any firearm you can legally own, and don't have to mark it with a serial number, manufacturer's name, or city/state.

Some states have stricters laws, and you need an approved form 1 before manufacturing NFA items. NFA items need to be marked with a SN, manufacturer's name, and city/state.

It is Mr single shot's book of rifle plans by Frank and Mark De Hass.
Thank you. Looking at the plans it seems fairly straightforward.

How reliable do you feel the safety is? Would you say it's adequate for hunting from a stand with the normal safety precautions?

Interesting info - thanks
