More confused than ever

The 280 AI is the Ackley Imp version of the 280 Rem which is based off the 30-06 case. It's very close ballistically to the 7 RM and 7 WSM. At 6000' elevation you could probably deliver a fatal shot to 1K with a good shooter, a good rifle, good load and bullet put in the right place.

Coyboy I could not agree with you more! That is why I have waited three years to build a cold bore 1k rifle. Perfect practice makes perfect results. However the conditions in the feild will always dictate what type of shot I will have. I am not building a rifle to only take 1k shots. If it is the only shot I have and the conditions are right I feel comfortable taking that shot. I want the equipment to be able to make the shot as well

Darrin, if your dedicated to the game and are fully capable of growing into the sport then I have to agree with the others. Build a big 338 and you will not grow out of your gun.

Owning a 1000 yard gun dosen't make you a 1000 yard hunter, practice and skill is what wins the race. Good luck with your new rifle.:)

That is a great statement, especially for new people (like me). Hearing that just because we have the equipment to do so does not make us all sniper grade marksmen, is a good thing.

No offense to the 338 guys, but a big 7mm (7mm RUM) pushing a 180 VLD (BC .659) @ 3300 fps will out run a big 338 pushing a 300 SMK (BC.76) @ 2900 fps. The 7mm will do better in windage, TOF and drop out to 1400-1500 yds. Not saying it is a better killer, but for killing deer and such, it's plenty good to where it goes below 1800 fps which is well past 1K @ sea level.

If the quarry was elk, I would say go for the big 338, but if it's just deer and general shooting the big 7 MM for dedicated LR is the best choice IMHO. The 7mm RUM will out shoot the EDGE at long range (1400-1500)

Hey Mark,
And then lets throw in the swampworks 180 jlk vld with a Bc of .735. And then we are comparing apples to apples and the 7mm wins. And I believe that the 7mm will take out elk upto 1k. Beyond is a different story! Thank you to all this is a great thread with great info, keep it comin!!

Holy cow!! I did not know that. How would one go about testing the b.c. to see if the numbers are correct. the jlk bullets are not expensive it might be a good test. don't know though

Darrin

Probably the best way to test them would be to shoot them at the same velocity, same day, and compare drops. Make sure the zeros are the same and the farther you shoot for comparison the better. But I doubt you will see much difference. If you wanted to go through the effort, you could at least find out which shot best in your rifle and then let the rest of us know what the drops showed.

I think the 300smk will buck the wind better than some of the other bullets mentioned at distances approaching and beyond 1k.

Chas, the 300 SMK is no doubt a good wind bucker, but when you take the velocities and BC's and crunch them in the ballistic calcs, the 7mm 180 VLD shot from a 7mm RUM will out perform the 300 SMK out of an EDGE ballisitcally. Windage (45.7" vs 48.3") and TOF is very close 2 1K but the 180 edges out the 300 slightly. The 180 has a big advantage in drop and velocity.

Montanarifleman, what muzzle velocity are you using for both? What about the 338AX or 338AM?

Chas, in post #19 I mentioned 2900 for the EDGE/300 SMK and 3300 for the 7 RUM/180 VLD. I think these are very realistic expected velocities for these cartridges in about a 28-30" barrel. Using the same barrel length, you're probably going to see about a 400 fps diff in vel.

What about the 7mm Allen mag? What does this cartridge do with the 180 bergers and the 200 wildcat bullets. I would love to see these numbers
