Montana Unlimited Units

Hey there fellas. I've been pretty seriously considering trying my hand in the unlimited units next year. I've read a ton of posts and forums so I somewhat understand the pros, the cons, and how little of good information the public is willing to hand out (and rightfully so). I've also done quite a bit of e-scouting and considering more than one unit at this point, but I have one I'm pretty keen on.

So I'm going out on a limb and looking to get any and all information y'all are willing to hand out. Books, people to talk to, needed gear, etc. I know I need good boots!

I'm a pretty experienced hiker and backpacker and consider myself in pretty good shape.

Appreciate it ahead of time!
Join Eastman's outdoors. They give out a lot of free information. If you are a member, they also show you how to navigate the system.Good luck

I'm watching this thread. I am tired of hunting for a place where there are not a hundred other hunters there. Been in Montana since 1998 and found more hunters than animals.
Good idea Rooster....I've been in Alberta Canada all my life....and haven't seen any Big Game animals ever! Except maybe on T.V. 😂

There is a good reason Montana has the all must wear hunter orange when hunting law. There are more hunters than game on the public ground. Its insane!!!!!!!
Most the elk are on private and the outfitters do a very good job keeping them on the private. I watched over a dozen elk killed on a ranch this year. The outfitter would line up about 3 or 4 hunters and then herd the elk to the hunters. Once they shot their elk the elk would start running to the public. The landowners and outfitters would run 5 or more trucks and side by sides along the road when the elk would try and leave after the shootings. They were herding the elk back onto their ranch, and it worked very well. I watched this paly out several times over a 7 day hunt. There were at least 400 head of elk. As for the public, OMG there was soooo many people with side by sides running around, it was very difficult to get away from all the people. This was Dillion Montana area. I was very disgusted with the lack of biggame managment Montana has there. The deer population was extreamly low, but yet I seen several camps with 3 or 4 does hanging, but not a single buck. Montana should consider a pick your unit to hunt. Somthing similar to other states. The current big game management model in Montana is not sustainable. Best of luck with your quest for a hunting spot. This type of combat hunting isnt for me, it disgusting. Dillion Montana area is a **** show, For what its worth.

Seems like it's getting crowded everywhere anymore and while I think it's good for the sport, it is putting a lot of pressure on the game in a hurry for a very short season... not to mention the diminished trust I have in some of the new to hunting folks out there.

OP you'll never know for sure unless you give it shot. Try it once and learn from the experience and Good Luck!

Nothing new here to this post, we've been seeing it for a long time.

Keep in mind this thread is about Montana's Unlimited sheep units................

Pick one of the units, marry yourself to it. Live, eat and breathe it and plan to do so for 5-10 years.

Plan to spend at least a couple weeks the first year scouting, and I'd take a week off before the season and try to find a legal ram and to shadow it. And for darn sure you won't be alone as this is a tactic known to most all.

You'll see tons of people, lots of gorgeous country. Have your track shoes on come opening morning!

IMO, this is the toughest hunt in NA bar none both physically and mentally.

I really wish they change it to a draw, even if they were fairly liberal with the tags (I think...). In an effort to reduce hunter numbers...

And feel comfy to be comfortable sleeping in and around plenty of large furry denizens:)

-----------------I posted this on another thread about these hunts, note there are 3 different threads (13ooo views between them alone, look at other hunt forums and you'll find even more) in the sheep section about this hunt as of now....................ya think it'll get pressure:( In a lot of ways we're our own worst enemy as is the internet (though there can be some helpful things to it

In a lot of ways we're our own worst enemy as is the internet
The internet, the podcast, the YouTube's, etc
It's made a bunch of people, who are otherwise room temp IQ people, competitive in the space, and has sparked massive interest to the point of overloading the western tag quota system which was already on a slight decline since the 70s. Due to human development and habitat changes.

Often enough, especially in these type of low success rate hunts, you are not only competing against the game animals for success, but you are competing against other hunters in the field.

One has a lot more issues with dodging others on this hunt than anything else...course then again there's the G bears. I was in one of the units a couple weeks ago. Watched Momma G bear and her kids playing for an hour or so at a comfy 347 yds. Couple days before that a buddy was in the unit and saw 6 G bears in one group

This thread is depressing for someone that's never hunted Montana, but had aspirations to at some point in my life :(. Then again, at least I'd still see some beautiful country.

Still a ton load of ways to hunt/fish/hike/backpack and see Montana, sheep is about the toughest way to do so though...one can still take a run at it though. Just good to have an idea of what one is up against.

I've been applying for a sheep tag for 46 years, haven't drawn. My wife drew one last fall, after 19 years of applying.
