Model 70 Stock Replacement Question for the Experts

I went with a HS Precision stock and a one piece floor plate. Eliminated the middle screw completely. IMHO the middle screw on a Mod 70 is troublesome at best. If I am forced to use a two piece floor plate, middle screw is just snugged and lock tited in. Never torqued down tight.

Where did you get it? When you say you eliminated it, did you just leave the screw out or did you fill that slot in the stock?

Can you tell me the dimension of those holes center to center? What caliber is that gun?

Was recently down this same rabbit hole and yeah the bottom Metal options for the Mod 70 are very limited and too expensive imo. The gun I was working on also a 3 screw but had a blind box mag on it so the middle screw was really just holding the front of the trigger guard. I'd feel fine without it if the trigger guard is molded in, especially if it's bedded. The stock I used was from Boyd's. Turned out really nice and I recommend giving them a look. They have several options for the Model 70 and I think they're priced very reasonable for what you get.

Where did you get the bottom metal? I would like to make the Hogue stock I have work if I can. But I will look into what worked for you. What model was that stock?

I just reused the factory trigger guard in my scenario. I believe the model was the "Prairie Hunter". Quite a few options but this is the one my brother in law liked. Swapped services with him fixing a couple of toilets and me bedding his gun in a new stock. Run through their stock builder and I bet you'll find something.

If you get a chance can you post a picture of it? Especially the bottom. I wasn't really considering wood but I'm interested in what worked for you.

This is the only pic I got of the finished product. Wish I had gotten more and some before pics as well. You can see a little of the bottom. Honestly I wouldn't have been looking into any kind of wood before this project either, but I was impressed with their product. It's laminate wood so is much more stable than traditional wood, and they've got a lot of options for a ton of different guns. I upgraded the recoil pad with this stock through their builder but otherwise it's the base product. After shipping and tax I was all in right around $250.

I prefer the one piece bottom metal to the two piece. That Center screw is only to hold the front of the trigger guard, it shouldn't be torqued it should only be snugged and over tightening it, or if it loosens up on you can cause accuracy trouble. No problem going to the one piece bottom metal, I think new production model 70s use the one piece, you might be able to call Winchester's parts department and get one. You'll need the one for the short action.
