I was thinking of 6.5/284 for a high country deer rifle, but after reading up on the 6.5x55 that may do what I need and maybe even with an off the shelf rifle. What do you guys think is the real world effective range on mule deer from an off the shelf production rifle like the Tikka on deer, providng optimum shooter skills? 130 gr - 140 gr VLD bullets.

If you go up one step in power from the 6.5-284 you get the 264 Win Mag. And the ballistic equivalent of that is the 270 WSM. Hows that for a off-the -shelf caliber?

You pays yer money and you takes yer choice. :D

Yep. Even the 6.5 Lapua will kill deer out to 1000 in the hands of the right shooter, but faster and flatter with pinpoint accuracy wins with me every time.

and apparently with a lot less recoil as well
I've shot the 6.5 Lapua and Grendyl as well as .260.

There's no significant difference in recoil in any of them. All were on AR pattern rifles too.

I went with the .260rem for myself based on a long list of criteria. If I'd been building a bolt gun instead of AR though I'd have probably gone with the 6.5rem mag or 6.5x284.

Amen on the 6.5 rem mag the best obsolete caliber there is with a lot of quality that is unknown to many shooters. It just needed a longer barrel to bring out the good in it. as good as the 264 mag any time.
