Hi I was woundering if any one has used the lapua scenar for hunting. I see where several shoot the VLD bullets an seem to like them. I would be useing them in a 6.5x284 with a shilen 1in 8 twist it shoots them in the low 2s. Mostly would be used on whitetail deer from real close lets say 25yds to 400yds.
Thanks for any info.

I was using sierra bthp match on deer w/ my 30-06 loaded pretty light for several deer. I didn't have any problems to speak of since they are such light skinned animals

Hello,

Just test them in wet newspaper and you will see if your recipe will work.

i have read that the lapua sceners are not a good hunting bullet, although i do not speak from expieriance. I have shot 6.5x47mm lapua factory loaded ammo with 123 gr sceners and it was under moa at 385 yards, so i thought the accuracy was pretty good for factory ammo just never hunted with it.

I've used Matchkings and they have always preformed very well for me. I've never used the Scenar, but did talk to a guy who used the 250grainers in his 338 Lapua. He show me a few pictures of cantaloupe size exit wounds on whitetails. He told me that all the shots were within 500yds.

This comes up quite often and I just have to ask= Why use a target bullet for hunting?

Target bullets are designed for maximum accuracy and punching holes in paper ,hunting bullets are designed for performance on game. and at all but the longest shots are very accurate.

The only time I can see the need to use target bullets on game is at extreme distance where
you need high BCs and all that go with it.

There is no doubt that a target bullet will kill but at the distance you refer to 400 or 500yards
there is no need to risk inconsistent performance from a bullet designed for target shooting.

You will never see a target bullet associated with terms like Controlled expansion or bonded
core because it is not important for a target bullet to possess these attributes.

There are some fine hunting bullets that not only perform well on game but are extremely
accurate and will shoot sub 1/4 MOA groups.

I would recomend using any good hunting bullet(Burger,Nosler,Speer,Hornady and others)
at the distance that they are capable of good accuracy and performance.

And If you want to shoot beyond 1000yards and the hunting bullets don't have the performance
needed then switch to a target bullet that does.

Just an opinion

Scenars are ilegal to use on game in some european countries.

They may be a bit hard? Better test them first.

I use 69gr sierra's in my ar-15 out to 200 yds for head and neck shots only and I've never had one walk away yet. Just doesn't take a cannon at short range to kill a deer.

what JE said. additionally : i ahve seen many on here that use matchkings reporting good success. i use hunting bullets for hunting. if i was paying 7k-10k to hunt whitetail in sask i would taKE my 7mm . i have shot a lot of scenars out of my 6.5-284's only at targets though.
