It looks like it was hastily roll marked(stamped) JM. The Ser# is on top tang-not receiver.
Which means slicker action, better trigger, nicer fit & finish. Before they were made in Remington Country
This action is way slicker than my other 1894's.

I hunted in the town of Ohio, Herkimer County for about 10 years when I was younger.

Town of Ohio, NY still has the largest Black bear harvest in the state. Shot 2 there myself.
