going to start load testing for a new (to me) rem. 243. IMR 4064, IMR 4895, 55gn nosler BTs, win brass. I have some CCI mag primmers that I bought by mistake and was wondering if anyone has experiance with mag primmers in a 243? I have plenty of BR2 and CCI lg rifle primers, but was looking to use these for a specific gun.
what say you? E

You can use the mag primers just start low with the powder and work up. You may find a grate load and you may not. Primers DO make a difference.

surely not needed unless your using ball powders and even then its questionable but they wont hurt. My old 6mms best load is with h4831 and a mag fed primer.

in my 243 win pistol I used 215 primers and v540 with a 100 hdy for my accuracy load. I even prairie rat hunted with the load. You just have to work up the load with the mag primer from the get-go...

range results today did indeed show pressure signs at noslers max load of I4064 @ 44.5 grs. accurate though.....E

Might work well in pistols, but in my 243IA rifle I hit pressure problems at extremely low velocity. This was with H1000.

I use regular primers and H4350. I feel H4350 is the best for 243

I found the same thing when I was trying to work up a load with WLRM Primers and h1000. Went to WLR Primers and the pressure signs went away, but I never got the fps I was after with the h1000. I switched to h4350 and it was a lot better. Now I'm in the OP's boat, trying to come up with a load for the 55gr noslers. I'm going with varget though. I'm a hodgdon kinda guy. Lol. Only because I can usually find it over other manufacturers.

I am going to go against the grain here ... I run a 6 Competition Match (a variant of a 243AI w/ 30 degree shoulder) and use H1000 exclusively under a 115 DTAC (49.4 gr. running 3,100 fps) with nominal pressure out of a 30" tube.

you can learn more about the 6CM here:

I would agree that in a straight .243 H1000 is likely too slow a powder for optimum results, but in a lot of the variants of AI, it is a good choice of powders. For a straight .243 the various 4350 powders (IMR and Hogden) work very well.

I also use a "magnum" primer - actually Wolf Russian (yes the shipping case has Russian writing on the box) large rifle magnum primers (truly a standard primer with a harder cup that the nominal Russian Large Rifle primer).

Mostly I use mag primers only in the large capacity cartridges.......there are exceptions. I use standard Winchester primers in my 7 rem mag but my 280 Ackley likes Federal 215M . Start with a moderate load and try them.....you never know.
