Sometime in 2021 a LRH Member post pictures and a story of the Octagonal Barrel he made on his Mill when he was making a restoration of I think a Sharps.
If you are the member please answer this post so I can look up your original post on making the barrel

He used a CNC. Big advantage over manual. Programed to power feed into the work, cut the flat, and then move away from the work. He has 4th axis, which rotates to the next flat automatically. The radius (at the shank/chamber end) is programed, and not dependent on using a large diameter cutter to establish that arc. A big savings in tooling.
