We're not limited to Vietnam era ammo in 5.56/.223 anymore. But still, "DRT" is WAY more dependent on shot placement (CNS) than brass headstamps.I don't like wounding things. I like DRT Dead Right There! 5.56 is not a DRT even in war. You have to be thinking about double tap or more against determined or drugged people.
As to AR15 being the answer!!!! In a helecopter you always try and transit above 1500 feet. Small arms like 5.56 or AK47 don't bother you at all. The bad guys even knew the range of 5.56 and were very safe way out there.
Did I every ever say 300 yards? 1500 feet is 500 yards straight up, right? how often is the person shooting directly below you and timing it perfectly? Also ask people that actually were there and they sat on a spare bullet proof vest. russian 12.5mm were bad news. Ask some person from Iraq or afgan light body armor and 556 was very ineffective for a person way out there. Just do some research! You needed a 308 sniper rifle. It's a dumb argument. I was stationed in Hawaii. They have the big Russian Boars. I bought a 30 cal carbine and they bounce off their forhead. So I bought the 44 mag ruger semi auto and it just took pigs outWe're not limited to Vietnam era ammo in 5.56/.223 anymore. 5.56/7.62x39 won't bother you at all at 300yds? Or are you talking about shooting aircraft with small arms?
You can handload a .22 centerfire to 80 grains. Good medicine on smaller deer here. Just keep your range down. It's way more about shot placement and bullet construction.Ethical people don't hunt deer with even a 22 center fire rifle. Western states even used to have laws against using things like my 22-250 or 22 swift during deer season.
Yes you can kill an elephant with a 22 But I have videos of my on loan 458 win mag 26 inch safari rifle taking out the African big 5 in one shot each with my hand loaded and tested 405 barnes x for plains game and lion and 510 gr round soft points. It was one shot on big browns with me in alaska. My dad use to shoot cape buffalo with his 300 win mag. I asked him why? and he said: the shells were available, he bought the rifle there and sold it before he came back. Later on he used a 416 rem mag on my advice
How many preditors have you actually gotten? My coyote days were always higher power 243 rem. or even PD hunting HP makes for red mist hunting. I use 55 gr varmigedon or HPBT 55 or 62 grain. Pigs as a kid in texas I always used a 270 with a 26 inch barrel. Most of my friends used 300 + mags on stands and feeders.
