Looking for a gunsmith to turn down a Varmint contour to a sporter contour

Re contouring will likely cost almost as much as a new blank. You could flute the crap out of it but it wouldn't shave the weight you want. Like others have mentioned if it's not a cut rifled barrel accuracy can definitely be effected.

Your best bet is to buy another blank of the contour you want. That might not be the answer your wallet wants to hear but im sure most will agree that it's money well spent.

Like I said on the other forum you posted on.
If it were me, I'd call Paul at Country Custom Metalsmithing.

This is just my opinion, so it doesn't mean much, but...by the time he gets done it would be about the cost of a new barrel, plus the risk of the barrels not shooting like it used to. Is it weighy you're trying to save or what is your end goal?

Recently, I purchased a very slightly used fluted barrel that was a button rifle barrel. I measured the bore dia with a PTG range rod and reamer bushings graduated in .0002 increments. The muzzle and breach end measured the same, while the area under the fluting opened up. The proper fitting pilot on the muzzle and breach end felt like it fell in a hole under the fluting. I was skeptical about even chambering it, but I thought it would make a great research project. I cut the threads off the back end and chambered the barrel for 260 AI. After about 10 trips to the rifle range, I realized that I had wasted enough money trying to make a bad barrel into a good one as I don't call the very best(occasional) 3/4" group accurate on a long-range barrel.

So, if you want to turn down a button rifle barrel, you take the chance on the inside bore dimension opening up giving you some very strange harmonics.

I use to get used bench rest barrel s from a friend , I had them turned down and re chambered for hunting cartridges. I did 8 of them .Both cut rifled and button rifled . Not a one was a bad barrel . The gunsmith who did them for me passed away . So I am looking for another one .
