Light Weight Rifle?

I have looked at the howa also and for what you get for the money it seems like a no brainer to me. If it meets your requirements and shoots sub moa. That's the route I would go. If you search the internet you will find them for about 1k.

I was figuring what I'd have to pay to get it ready. Things like tax, FFL fees, scope mounting options, and a new ASR brake plus purchase. Most expensive I've found online is around $1300 for one online, so I figured $1500 was a safe bet.

A used Mountain Ascent with a new carbon barrel.

Sounds very expensive.

That's an 8 lb (7 lb 15.4 oz) rifle pictured, add my suppressor to that rifle and I'm 9 lbs even, saves me 5 ounces. I'd steal my Daughter's Howa Alpine as it's a 7.5 lb all up rifle as well, but for some reason she didn't leave it with me when she moved out after graduation. I don't know what she was thinking by not leaving that rifle with me, darn kids.

The howa superlight is advertised as 4 lbs 7 oz, and chambered in .308 and 6.5 cm, and is around $1200 new after all is said and done. Probably wouldn't be a bad budget ultralight rifle

Adirondack and or mountain ascent are cataloged but haven't shipped in a while. Mountain ascents come up with a fair degree of regulatity but specific calibers can take a while, but seems like they are running under 2k. Locally are some nos in 270 and 6.5 manbun. They are at shops that trend on the high side of prices hence why they survived the covid ballers, just under 2200 so that should provide a top end.

Swap the shv for a swarovski z 3 and loose 10 oz. Ascent might need some work for a can to shoulder but they are usually threaded for a break.

At a glance it looked the same as my scale, my scale reads in lbs and oz, or grams. Your math is correct sir!

Your way is a lot more expensive proposition, changing the rifle and optic. As far as a suppressor on the Ascent it isn't an issue if you use their thread adapter going from 7/16" to 5/8".

I wouldn't get all bent out of shape over 1.2lbs between 8lbs finished and 9.2lbs finished.

But, I will never tell anyone to NOT build a new rifle.
To be at your desired 5lbs bare rifle will be really tough though. A lot of concessions will need.to be made.

Nice specs, but I can't touch that build for $2500 or less. Why not the .308? I like it, and I find it's very effective even on elk. I realize it's vanilla these days to use the .308, but a guy wants what he wants.

Why would I sell my NF? I'd leave it on the current rifle as it's pretty handy in the blind, or upgrade one of my other rifles optics.

Five pounds is really tough and not necessary with an 8 pound goal.

My rifle weighs 8 on the nose with a 6 ounce EC tuner brake and 28 ounce NF nx8. The bare rifle is right at 6 or a shade over. It has a CF barrel at 21 inches which is light but not ultra-light.

It's a custom built on a Defiance anti action.
In factory I'd look at Sako / Tikka, Weatherby back country, Howa, Savage and Kimber. I'm sure I'm missing a few then there's the Simi customs like Fiarce and the like but they may be more than you're looking to spend.
