does anyone run the Leupold vx5 2-10x42 on there long range rig? I'm having a hard time deciding if I should save up some more cash an get the higher magnification or go with the smaller one. Max range on a critter will probably be around 700 but I wanna shoot steel way out on occasion. It will be used for hunting 99% of the time.

I'd go 3-15 w/ parallax also. If budget is a concern, take a look at the Vortex Razor LH 3-15x42, I've been using one for a year and a half and it has been really good to me.

IMO, the VX-5HD 3-15x44 is a much better scope. Glass is better, you get 20 MOA more adjustment in your turrets with the 30 mm tube, you get a better zero stop system, and more reticle options. All for a very comparable price.

Can't argue that VX5HD has a better featureset.

Could argue which has better glass.

I didn't realize the prices had become so comparable - I'm used to seeing those Razor LH's on sale for $550. For $899USD, I agree, VX5HD all the way.

Here in Canada, the Razor LH is selling new for $1000CAD, the VX5HD $1500. That's a significant difference!

Me think! You don't know how to use parallax? Never a better time to learn. The 2x10 is a nice scope, but I don't believe you will find many people on here that don't think your scope should have the parallax setting for long range. Good luck with your decision and above all have fun and be safe.

I guided a Leaupold engineer last year. Essentially I had the same questions for him. I can't come close to providing the same information but it boiled down to 10x or less, in conjunction with other features, parallax adjustments just aren't needed.
A great hunting scope.

i shoot a 2x10 for moose but end up on 4x but nice to crank up power if i need it

The Nightforce 2.5-10x24 doesn't come with a parallax adjustment and when I looked into it the reason I found was that Nightforce didn't think that parallax adjustment was necessary for 10x. I've been using said Nightforce for 12 years or so and I must say that I've never had any problems hitting targets out to 1000.

However, unless the money was driving my decision between the 2-10 or 3-15 or there was a significant weight savings, I would probably opt for the 3-15.

I'd definitely go with 3x15. You are not giving up much of anything on the low end but are gaining so much on the high end. I've really come to appreciate the higher magnification. The good thing about Leupold or Vortex is the warranty. I wouldn't even hesitate to buy used to get what I wanted.

I have installed a myriad of scopes on guns. Leupold has to be one of my top 2 choices in gun scopes. my favorite hunting range is the 14-16 power top end for out to 500 yards.. anything beyond I like to use a top end of 18 to 20 power. my only suggestion is make sure there is comfort at low power for your normal shots and comfort (ability to fully see what you are hitting) at the top power. I have a 6.5-20X50MM on my 270 Win for that very set of circumstances when I was up in Montana taking long shots on Elk. I liked being able to clearly see the animal at 409 yards to 836 yards. these two ranges were not my only shots over 300 yards. they happen to be the two shots I remember the best on my last week of the last season I hunted up in Montana before I pulled back to Nevada where I am now. Now I advocate for 14 to 16 power top ends for speed goats out in the flat lands of this part of Nevada. it's nothing to need to shoot 400+ yards since the skittish goats here know all too well to stay as far away from a human as possible. I have personally shot at 500+ here.
