Knowing what you know now, which cartridge?

I Know this may be corny but I thought it would be interesting to see the results. Here's the question:

Knowing what we know today about ballistic coefficient, wind drift, etc...
What pre 1980's off the shelf, factory form cartridge would you be using today if those were your only choices.

280 Remington. Y'all ought to be able to figure out why

When I got home from the army I bought a 300H&H. The reason was it was the only 300 mag I could find in my price range in a Winchester pre64 action. It was set back and rechambered in 300win by my grandfather when it came home.
I had dope on the 190smk out to 1200yds but I didn't have a means beyond topo maps and a compass to get a range.. The guys shooting long today that can still make a first-round hit with a data book and a topo are few and far between. So the next time someone tells you hitting a 600 1000 or further is easy ask them to hit at ukd and give them a compass and a topo with a fine crosshair or #4 or even a duplex and smile

I 've shot all on the list and only one I didn't hunt with was 25-06. The only one on list I still hunt with is Lilja barrel 270. 80's I necked up 7mag to 30cal for 30-338mag and I still hunt with 30-338mag. I really didn't shoot 280 but did 7mm Express and I have 270Wby.

When we moved to Co 1977, my first bull elk was taken with 7mag and used 270 for buck tag.

The 280 and 7mm express are the same cartilage. Correct please if I am wrong.
