Improving the 308 Win performance

Case primer pocket and base will hold up better and allows for higher pressure without beating up the brass. I'll send you 20 for free when I get my shipment of 250 if you'd like.
That's a really generous offer! Hold that thought. The only srp I have is fed205. Ok to use? (Do have fed205gm and #41, but not currently wanting to deplete my stash.) Are powder types/requirements published?

No need for specific load data published, just know that you can usually run a hotter load usually and primer pockets last longer. Any of those primers will work. Some even run SRP magnum primers. The load with the 150 BD that @nralifer is running is using SRP brass and I believe he's running magnum primers. Too bad you weren't closer as I could throw ya some primers also.

"I am sure it can out perform the 30-06" Wow, I am sure just the opposite is true. When both cartridges are loaded the same way with the
same pressures, the larger capacity case wins.
I have 2 good 308's and I shoot them more than my other rifles except for 223. When I want more than the 308, I go with my 30-06 and for sure if I was going after long range Elk, I will take my 300WM.
I have nothing against getting the most (safely) out of any cartridge, but this thread has been a mixed bag for sure!
My sentiments exactly. BTW, my gun decision paradigm is the same. It works for me well. Milage may vary.
 
Right now my favorite 308 load I've been shooting is a Barnes TTSX 130, running at 3085 FPS out my 18" bolt gun. It's 5 shot one hole accurate and good out to 500-600 yards for my Coues deer hunting. Running with cheap Sig large primer brass and AA2460. Got some other loads I'm cooking up for it and my son in laws 308.

I run 46.5gr Benchmark under the 130 TTSX for 3,140fps in a 22" bbl. Accuracy is surprisingly good with 3-shot groups regularly coming in under 2" at 400yds. Whitetails prefer that I don't use this load. LOL

I am shooting my 06 with 215 Bergers coming out 2830. Compare that with the 150 BDs. Have not, so please, do us a favor and compare.
How about some more information on your load. Barrel length, powder used, twist rate, brass used. The 2021 Hodgon data from a 1:10 twist barrel 24" long for a 3006 shooting a 208 gr Amax ( max speed = 2660 with SB6.5 powder) is about 230 FPS slower than what you are quoting for your '06. Something is not right.

The 150 BD2 from my 308Win using LVR out of a 24" Bartlein 1:9 barrel will go 3180-3200 FPS.

Last winter, on the range, I had confirmed drops every yardage through 1200. At 1200, 9.6 mils was spot on for center mass on eSilhouette.

I thought your numbers were from a standard 30-06. The 30-06 Serengeti has chamber that's different I take it but still allows standard 30-06 brass to be used?

Yes, the LC 67 Match I used were fired from 03s, and NM M1s. I just annealed and FL sized them, then uniformed primer pockets, deburred flash holes, and skim cut necks.

This post shows an optimized 3006 load shot from a long 28" barrel, high energy double base powder in a non-standard chamber. It does not represent a standard 3006 load or chambering. Nevertheless the post is analogous to what I was trying to illustrate in the 308 Win. Your data is very nice and illustrates how much additional performance can be squeezed out the 3006 when powder and chambering are optimized along with a high quality bullet. You could further optimize it by using a lighter bullet (205 gr .308 SBD2) shot from tighter 1:8 twist barrel. The 205 gr bullet has significantly higher BC roughly equivalent to the 230 gr Berger. The 308Win loads I was talking about used a barrel 4" shorter and more suitable for hunting because of the more compact rig. The comparison of the 308Win to the 3006 was data from a production rifle using lower energy powders in the 3006 published data from the 2021 Hodgdon Annual Manual. The optimization of the 308 Win was using a 175 gr BD2 (G1=0.605) bullet, Lapua Palma brass that can withstand higher pressure because of the SRP primer, and the high energy Leverevolution powder. Both your data and mine illustrate the same point, that being that a significant amount of additional performance can be unlocked from either cartridge when component selection is optimized.
