I want a FREE LUNCH 300 Rum Erosion

Be careful of minimum charge wts. with large cases and slow powder.

YES. Make sure you are using a documented reduced load for 300 RUM. 2000 FSP just sounds slow even for a reduced load.

Yep, reminds me of ......................................................................... :D:cool:gun)

rhouser,

I'm in the same boat as you though 6 years older and fewer rifles in the stable.

Those sweet shooting fun guns are costly in barrel life but mucho rewarding in pleasure.

Making small rock hits out to around 1500+ plus cost me two barrels that never shot anything with hide on it.

I traded around and ended up with a 3rd generation colt 45. The colt, a Henry 44 mag, a Sig 556 and a 375 Allen are all that's left in the safe.

The 375 is prairie dog accurate to as far as a fella want stop shoot and the rest serve the purpose for short range stuff. If I shoot nothing but stuff with hair on it it'll last a couple of generations.

I may build a 6.5 or 270 Sherman Short one of these days to have a fun shoot'n iron.

Royinidaho, you understand.

My 300 rum is an older 700 Police. I had shot out the barrel and have replaced it with a really fine barrel and brake. I ran 25 rounds of my hunting load during barrel break-in process (an old guy thing these days I guess). I was shooting 91.5 of Retumbo and bullets split between the SMK 200 gr and NAB 200's.

Because of the barrel weight and the Muscle Brake, I ended up the break-in shooting the rifle like a bench gun. I was using a one hand rested hold with the other hand only to squeeze the bag. I was almost letting the gun free-run on the rest with only a light lean against the stock. I could see the strike of the round and even see the flash at the brake. What a Sweet Shoot. The accuracy is really there and will come finer in the next 50 - 75 rounds.

I should just final tune my hunting loads and then put it up till hunting season. If it was my shovel, I could do that.

I am not interested in making my RUM perform like a 30-30. I want it to be a RUM when I hunt. It is during the rest of the year that I may find a way to work the bolt and pull the trigger without losing my round count for the barrel. This is NOT a recoil issue, only a barrel life during non-hunting use.

thanks to all. rch

I still think you would be better off buying/building a 2nd rifle in .308 Win just for plinking and range work during the rest of the year, since that is the level of performance you want to drop your RUM down to when you're not hunting. A .308 Win with a 24-26" barrel will send 168-175gr bullets around 2,700 fps, and will have ****-near infinite barrel life.
