I think I'm going with a Savage 116 7mm Rem Mag

Are you suggesting I should be considering a 300 WSM instead of the 7RM?

Shot, not at all. I like the 7mm RM and its availability of loaded ammo and reloading components. My comment was aimed at the performance of the Savage 116 my friend has which only happens to be a 300WSM. Both are great for elk and lighter game. Good luck and be pleased with your choice.

Ah good. My head started spinning again. So it seems like 7RM either the 111 LRH or 116 FCSS. Doesn't seem like you can really go wrong with either.

The 116 Weather Warrior series has the AccuStock as well. The main differences are the SS, hinged floor plate, adjustable comb, and the muzzle brake. The latter is where I believe where the extra 2" come from and an aftermarket muzzle brake might correct that on the 116.

I stand corrected, I did not realize the weather warrior had an accustock. Sounds like you got it figured.....you want a Savage, you want a 7 Rem mag....go for it and start sending target pictures. gun)

My best shooting rifle is my only Savage with a Bartlein barrel. The longest shot I ever made was with my firends Savage 110 BA 338 Lapua, totally stock.

They ain't the purdiest rifle in the safe but they sure do shoot.

I wish I had it all figured out! I would have had a rifle on order already. I'm still debating the 111LHR vs 116FCSS. I've set a deadline for myself for tomorrow. Something is coming to my door (or the door of my FFL).

I do most of my hunting with a Savage 116 in 7mm RM. it has the accutrigger but no accustock. It was my first hunting rifle and was done on a budget. My next bolt action will have a less restrictive budget. I took off the bases/rings and Simmons scope that came with it and replaced them with Talley lightweight rings and a 3-9x40 Bushnell Elite 4200 scope that was on clearance at the time. Even with the crap Tupperware stock it would shoot just about 1 MOA with Winchester 150gr super X factory loads. I've tried several different factory loads and it shoots everything under 2.25 MOA but seems to like Winchester the best. Once I've shot through my remaining factory ammo I will start reloading for it. Later, I replaced the factory stock with a Hogue full-bedding block stock. The new stock makes the rifle more comfortable to shoot, but doesn't improve the accuracy noticeably.
I think the rifle is capable of shooting better with a more skilled shooter than myself and I may find a load that it really likes once I start reloading.
Anyways, just wanted to relate my experience with this gun since you're considering it. All told, I have only about $1,000 invested in it, not counting ammo costs.

I think I'm going with the 111 LHR now. My logic is that I like the 26" barrel. I was reading that's really recommended for the 7mm rem mag vs the 24" barrel on the 116. That combined with a muzzle brake and comb and it seems I get a decent package right out of the box. I almost put in my order this morning but I realized my ID was in my car which I won't have until this afternoon. At that point it will be done and dusted.

You can't go wrong with a Savage!

+1!

Great choice since I had one,but the barrel is really 24 inches. The addition of the muzzle break makes it 26 inches if I remember correctly.

I'm not sure if that's right but I'd love to know. They advertise the 116 FHSAK as a 24" rifle with a brake. That's a true 24" barrel. Either way its done

I aquired a Savage FCP .300WM, comes with a 24" barrel. It does not hinder accuracy at all. The speed loss is minimal from 24"-26". Don't sweat the small stuff, enjoy and shoot straight....gun)
