Hunting with E-bikes

I won't be bashful about it, more people are accessing the back country. Good hunting tags are more difficult to draw. So yea, anything that reduces the convenience of human access to the backcountry is not a problem but a filter. Public land might be owned by the masses but that doesn't mean I want to see the masses there. If you think packing into an area is too draconian then tip your hat as the infantry marches by. E bikes can ride with the rest of the mechanized masses on there purty little trails.

E-bikes will produce ruts on a trail as fast as mountain bikes. I have lived in Colorado for 25 years, and have seen ruts grow to a foot in depth over four or five years on hiking trails where mountain bikes were introduced. I run trails as well as hiking, hunting, and mountain biking. The ruts made by mountain bikes are often narrow enough that I can't run or hike in them comfortably. I see parallel hiking trails growing alongside the ruts in these places. The steeper the hill, the quicker erosion exacerbates the ruts. I wouldn't want to see wheeled vehicles of any kind in primitive or wilderness areas. Humans have used horses for a long time. They're primitive, and while they certainly chew up a trail, they don't rut the trail like wheels do. I say this while acknowledging that E-bikes are a sort of "poor person's horse" or "old person's horse." I'm about 60, and would probably enjoy saving my old knees by hunting off an E-bike. I'd rather contribute to keeping primitive areas primitive.
Of course, ruts on trail will occur in due time and usage. I do not mind contributing to the process. I am advocating the shared responsibility of upkeep.

I broke a bone in my foot last year. I bought an ebike to ride to my hunting areas. I ride right up to where I hunt. They sure are quite. I hunt private land so bumping into to someone other than main logging road is non existant for the most part.

I worry about how quite my ebike is with all the 4 wheelers and SxS's on the logging roads but so far I have not crossed paths with anyone daylight or dark.

I could see where on public land it would me much different.

You can also convert a regular bike to an Ebike for much, much less. Lots of Ytubes and reviews, bafeng is the motor to get and a good battery, Panasonic, Samsung, etc. You can get any AH battery you can afford.

So do horseback riders wear helmets? How many first time riders have wrecks with outfitters. I see it all the time. Blame the "instrument" is exactly what this administration is doing for gun control. Ebikes are NOT to blame. E-Bikes do not have some sort if psychic influence over people. People are RESPONSIBLE and ACCOUNTABLE for their own actions so blaming an inanimate object is exactly how we are losing our rights. Its like saying its the horses fault for erosion and not the riders. People have to become educated on anything they do for the first time. Sometimes the education is the hard way. Thats human nature. Its ALL of our responsibility to help, educate, mentor, and if necessary or required turn them in for enforcement.
I ride horses without a helmet, my wife rides with a helmet. It's probably more people trail riding don't where helmets.

So, how do you feel about 100% disabled veterans who can barely walk 100 yards because of back injuries suffered on active duty using a device like an e-bike in the back country? We're certainly paid our dues, so to speak, for being on public lands.

If that is the case, Thank you for your service. What you bring up is a totally separate issue. Should disabled be allowed to use E-bikes? If so I think a special permitting process would have to be in order. As I stated, handicapped individuals can drive into where I hunt. My stance is non motorized trails and roads should not be opened to E-bikes. Handicap use should be reviewed separately. 406muley

I do not think he is asking for special treatment for being a disabled veteran. Most veterans that I know don't.
