How far away will you shoot at a deer?

I have 6 hunting guns and each with a different probability of 1st shot cold bore hit within a 14" circle dependent on range and energy, etc. So to answer, 400 to 900 yards depending on each gun's maximum effective range shooting probability to hit a 14" circle, dependent on measured 2mph or less winds at any direction with confirmed laser range, temperature and known Density Altitude plus all the other limiting range variables.

It's not loaded, if your not looking for an argument. I'm guessing he meant in optimal conditions. I for one am glad he left it up for interpretation so everyone had a chance to answer.

Right now I would say depending on the ammo i was using, how high i was in the tree, if i had had breakfast or not, what the temp was, if i was using the barrel that was rifled or smooth, how big my target was, if it was moving or sleeping, how far i had to drag it, and taking into consideration the time of year and coriolis effect, under 100 as I am in a slug only zone.

I'm voting for 750 since that's as far as I have reliably practiced at. If the conditions are poor and the deer is moving fast I've passed up shots at 250 yards too... all depends

Speed of sound is 1115 FPS. If your rounds are THAT slow...you might as well take the bullets and throw them at the game animal

I think I assumed that he meant flinching from the sound, and he probably meant just arbitrary jitters when they are just not feeling comfortable. I adjusted my sos upward for altitude. How's that for BS?

I tried the coriolis effect "on" once with my computer while duck hunting. It didn't work too well. I ate an iron vitamin and it screwed up my magnetic direction and I ended up shooting the beak off a decoy.

Based on these parameters? Heck I would shoot it way past 0!!! Not shooting at any animal unless I believe 100% I'm going to stone/kill it on the first shot.

I voted 1000. This past year we took 3 coues bucks at 890, 825, and 630 yards. Conditions have to be right of course and you need to practice at the ranges you would be shooting and know you guns capabilities.

depends on what rifle I have my lr rig has much more range than my range finder. (saving for a terripin) the last time I shot a 1000 on steel I put 5 out of 6 in at 1/2 min but we had flags benches gun vise ect lot of variable in the field. I put 700 and thats pushing my range finder a bit, piece of cake for my 270 AMP in good conditions

I'm limited to 500 yards, only because that's all the range I have to practice. With minimal practice I would be comfortable to 800-900.

What kind of deer are we talking here? A big, thick muley after hoofing it through the conditions, shooting out of breath and exhausted, or a 100lb white tail doe off a feeder?

buy a better range finder that 270amp with shoot twice that far
