Hey guys I need some input on a project I am doing 300 H & H

Great cartridge! I'd get some good copper solvent(I like BoreTech) and give the barrel a thorough brushing. Also check for carbon ring/carbon wash. When buying once fired cases, a lot of nickel plated brass shows up for the 300H&H. While ai prefer all brass, the nickel plated cases will work well, but generally do not have the case life of an all brass case. Be sure to use sufficient lube, and very clean cases….the nickel can scratch your dyes. With repeated use of a nickel plated case….keep an eye on your necks and web area….For cracking/splitting.
Thanks Grey fox I could have bid on some live ammo to obtain brass but I saw it was plated so I backed away. And for what they want for new brass ( 4.00 a piece ) I can buy loaded ammo and get all the brass to load I need. I have it soaking with shooters choice as we speak, so we shall see after I complete a good cleaning. I wonder about the concentricity of the brake to bore or as was said diameter of each. I wonder how hard it will be to remove.

My introduction to the 300 H&H came back in my days shooting competitively in the Army. Our issue long-range rifles were Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 match grade rifles chambered in 300 H&H with 10X Unertl scopes. The combination was deadly accurate but extremely punishing when shooting 1000 yards prone, even with heavily padded leather shooting coats shoulders were pretty beat up after shooting 20 rounds for record.
Ben Comfort won the 1000-yard Wimbledon Cup Match at Camp Perry in 1935, and then the international 1,000 yard competition in 1937. Most likely encouraged the Pre 64 Winchester decision . What did you think of those Unertl scopes back then compared to todays offerings . I am glad this one has the laminate stock as it ways 12 1/2 lbs. with the scope . I have a 300 and a 6.5 - 300 Weatherby and I don't like abusive recoil myself.

You can take 375 H & H brass and resize it to 300 H & H sizes. Probably need to get a bushing die and step it down bushing to acheive the resizing. or you could change out the barrel to 375 H & H mag.
The only thing is case separation at the belt. You may want to create a step or donut in the neck by using a neck sizing die. Stop short of the should at the neck. To stop the stretch at the base. That what I did a long time ago to stop the separation at the base on belted mag case in my 308 NM rifle.

@N.Y.Arnie If you go that route, I recommend minimum 2 annealings during sizing down and neck turning as the necks will get pretty thick going down from 375 to 308.

Try for a bushing neck only die. I haven't price up bushings. I make my own. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes, been there, done that. 458 down to 375 and lots of other caliber adjustments.

Wish I could help with a gunsmith. I'm in Mo.

Yes Terri, the drop of the stock is way to much for me to handle, and it looks like its ready to punch your check when fired. Peep sights were very big in the 40's and early 50's . I have come to learn a tiny bit about the Three generations of the Pre 64 Winchester, and how it evolved into an excellent shooting platform for serious hunters as the concept of scopes became really popular, in the 1950. If one looks at O'Conner's three Winchesters , one can see what the "smiths" were doing to allow for the use of scopes. Including restocking all three of his rifles. My rifle came with a Lyman Alaskan scope, 2 1/2 power scope on a 3/4 inch tube. My 1949 happens to be what is called a "Transition Model " , and changes were to both the rec Receivers Tang shaping , as well as the stock design a couple of years later. I am not a collector, but just really wanted one my whole life, in 300 H and H !! I have made some light loads, using IMR 4831 and 180m Grn Hornady SST. Since the brass is unfired Rem Brass, but old, I think a fire forming session would be just fine. This rifle is just for FUN!!! Can't wait for spring. !!!!~
Virtually all of my competitive shooting in the Army was with peep sights on M-14 and later M-16 rifles, out to 600 yards. 1000 yards was with the Model 70 in 300 H&H Mag, I also shot metallic silhouette with my rifle, a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06 and a Redfield 3 x 9 accu range scope. The barrel got shot out of that one within 1000 rounds. That barrel got replaced with a 26 inch, stainless, Obermeyer super match grade barrel, chambered in 7.62 x 51. I have looked around for another Winchester Model 70 in 300 H&H and over the years only found one and the guy that had it thought it was made of gold and had a price tag of several thousand dollars on it.

Yup I know they want a quite a penny for them. I have seen where they get a modern adjustable stock and lock away the beautiful stock that they came on. I get bored easy so this will be a fun project for me now that I am retired with all this spare time on my hands. LOL :)
