Help me set up to reload a 300 win mag

I was thinking of buying a Lee Collet die, a Redding body die and a Forster ultra bullet seater to reload for my new Savage 110HS Precision. What are your thoughts on that set up? It has worked well for me in smaller calibers but I have never loaded for a 300 Win Mag. I have H1000 powder, CCI LR mag primers and am waiting on some Hornady brass. I am looking for a good Elk bullet to go with this mix? Any advise on dies, technique or components? Thanks for your help!

Looks like you have just about everything you need and I am assuming you already have the fundamentals down for reloading.

I would try the Berger 215 Hybrids with the H1000. Play around with the seating depth until you get somwthing that meets your accuracy criteria. Keep in mind, shoot at longer distances than 100 yards when testing. I find 100 yards may give me a poor indicator of accuracy, but meets my expectations at further distances. Also, I should mention to try H4831sc if not satisfied with the H1000 results.

There is a running post about the 215 Hybrids that is worth reading.

Good luck!

When reloading any belted magnum case be sure that you FL die is not pushing the shoulders back too far. You will need a bump gauge to determine this.

+1. Berger 215 Hybrids are the way to go. I think you'll be happy with the Lee Collet die and Redding body die. Sounds like you have a good set up. If you can't find H1000, IMR 7828SSC might be a good suggestion.

Good luck! Let us know how it works out.

My only recommendation would be to go with a different neck sizing die than the Lee Collet dies. I've used the Lee and found it left marks on my case necks where the sides of the collet came together. The Redding bushing die that was suggested earlier is a good commendation. If you don't like the bushings, the 'standard' Redding neck sizing die is nice also (that is what I use).

215hybrid in 300winmag is a great combination.

I disagree about bagging the lee collet dies. I use your setup exactly (Redding FL, Lee Collet Neck, Forster Ultra Seater) with both my 308 and 300 win mag and have had excellent results with both. I did polish both the mandrels for my collet dies (to increase neck tension just a tiche) as well as the internals, and for the price, they are an absolute steal.

A long time ago, the lee collet dies were recommended to me by some old time reloaders when I was having accuracy issues. Without changing a single other process in my reloading prep and work, these dies alone reduced my groups sizes dramatically.

My last trek out with my 308 put 5 of 6 shots within a 3.39" x 2.59" group at 600 yards... And I had my usual flyer at 6" from center. It's really hard to complain about those kinds of groups... And I'm not a die hard long range shooter with mad skills.

Totally sold on lee collet dies.

Don't be afraid to try Berger 210's either. I realize they don't have the BC of the 215 but they're much easier to find in my experience. I've used both H1000 and H4831sc. H4831sc did give me slightly better results in my rifle. I also think you've made a good choice with your die selection. I run nearly the same setup and see no reason to change.

I've done quite a bit of experimentation for a good elk load for my Rem. 700 in 300 WM over the past 18 months. I've tried H4350, H1000, RL 22 and H4831sc ...worked up various powder weights and bullets including Hornady Interbonds, Sierra Game Kings and Nosler Partitions, Accubonds and, most recently 190 gr. Accubond Long Range.

I have had good groups with H1000 and my best groups (under 1" @100 yards and 2" at 200) with 73 gr. (Max load...so work up to it) of H4831sc behind 190 gr. ABLR's with Fed 215 M primers in Nosler and Winchester cases. I also found that by using a Hornady bullet comparator and gauging my max COL ( 3.650") in my rifle, then backing off to 3.650". This is the load I'll be during for elk in WY in October.

By the way, the 190 ABLR's are very hard to find now ....I was lucky to snag a box of 100 last week by searching the web and getting the last box they had at the BassProShop in Hanover, MD (I live in PA).

Good luck,

:)

Don... I'm a bit confused, are you saying that the length of your cartridge which puts you into the lands is 3.650 and that you are shooting a bullet with a coal of 3.650?

So you are into the lands with your bullet?

Personally, I'd back off at least .010 from the lands.
