Hammer bullets shoot!!!

It doesn't really. The constant 30 (dimensionless) in the miller formula represents a drag coefficient of 2800fps at 'army standard metro'.

In recent years it has become apparent that gyroscopic stability does not always correlate to DYNAMIC stability. Dynamic stability is a tricky topic, but deals with a bullet's stability as the density of the medium it travels through varies. Typically these discussions centre around transonic flight, but I believe similar mechanics are at play when a bullet transitions from one medium into another. The Miller formula is of little use here, as it assumes drag to be a constant, which IT IS NOT!

Dynamic Stability is an interesting topic to consider, but fairly complex to test and model, especially where varying target angles and densities are involved. Fortunately SG can be used as a pretty good guideline - I'm by no means an expert, but it seems hunters might not always get the performance they expect when flirting with marginal stability. Especially when projectiles are long and pointy. This moves the centre of gravity toward the rear, in effect increasing the leverage available at the tip.
That is what we have seen as well. I think the longer the nose gets and maybe the longer the overall length gets the more difficult this gets. I have made my head spin trying to research dynamic stability.

So Steve, My 270wsm has a 26" Brux with 1-8 twist. I am primarily a hunter and shoot out to a max 800 yards with this rifle. What hammer bullet would you recommend?

You would properly stabilize up to our 156g Hammer Hunter. I think this would be my choice. It is a pretty long bullet and depending on your mag length and throat may wind up started deep into the case. This is a Common problem with the wsm. The 126g Hammer Hunter would be a laser beam. Me being a vel hound would have a hard time talking my self out of it. Thing to do is run them sxs on a ballistics program, like jbm, and print out The charts and look at them together. See which one covers your bases best. It really comes down to your hunting style and how often do you encounter the long end of your max range. Of the longest shot is common go with the heavier one.

looking at side by side print outs is a great way to compare......been doing that for years....Good Advice!

This thread has me rethinking my thoughts on attempting to find a load for the CEB MTH in my 270SS. I was planning to try several bullets I have lying around - Barnes 130gr TTSX, Nosler 130gr Accubond, Nosler 150gr Ballistic Tip, Cutting Edge 120gr MTH, and Cutting Edge 140gr MTH - for accuracy and decide which after seeing how my rifle shot them all. After hearing how simple the Hammers are to load up, especially when considering the time, powder, and headaches saved, it sounds like it may be worth it in the end! All these extra bullets may end up sitting on the shelf after getting used to fireform my SS cases before finding a fast load for the 117gr in my new rifle.
How far back from the tip of the bullet do the driving bands start, Steve?

So I just tried the Hammer web site and it looks like it's down at moment.

Does anyone know the correct Bullet for a 300wm with 9 twist?

You'll be able to shoot heavier than the 181 gr Hunter. I can't remember what the heavier bullet weights are off the top of my head. My 300 wsm has a 1:11 twist, so I can only shoot the 166 gr Hunters or lighter.

Not sure. Considering a 300wm or PRC by Badrock. Defiance action. Just doing some research on what long range hunting bullets might work well with the 9 twist barrel that comes on it.

The 1-9" should get you into the 190+ Hammer's.
Depending on magazine or single loading I would guess (sites still down) the 166, 174 or 181, are likely choices.

To make a very long story short, I'm shooting a 300 win mag. Browning a bolt ll action,Christensen24" barrel, 1-10 twist, custom carbon fiber stock bedded.Leopold vx5 3-15x56.weighs in at 8lbs.
I've tried many different bullets geared towards long range capabilities, including 190 gr ablr, 180 ab.200 ab.175 lrx,200lrx, 180 sst, and 200 gr eld-x. I could always get it to shoot decent in the 1 to1 1/2 moa range no matter what ,but that wasn't gonna cut it for a rifle I have quite a lot money invested into. I did get the 200 gr eld-x to shoot very good at times but had major inconsistencies. (See my other posts warning about hornady eld-x)At this point I'm around 600-700 rounds through this barrel.
Steve, from hammer bullets suggested I give their bullets a try.I ordered a box of hammer hunter 181 gr.and as Steve's recommendations, Imr 7828ssc, seated the bullets as long as the mag box would allow, which ended up being .120 jump. I loaded one round at a time watching velocity and looking for pressure signs.77 gr. Put me at 3100 fps. I called that good with no pressure signs. I loaded up 3 at 77gr, went out to 410 yd.and it shot .60 moa first group. Velocities were, 3097,3100,3100. I believe it shoots even better than that but that's the best I can do with only 15x scope. Its consistant now, and I've shot multiple 1/2 moa groups since. I believe its true about these bullets not being sensitive to seating depth, and everything that the website and Steve has said has been true in my case. I recommend you guys give these a try ,especially if you have a finicky rifle. I can't wait to try them out on game!
Thank you Steve for an awesome USA made product.
I had the same problem with a custom 7mm WSM that I have had for 6 years. I finally ordered the 143 Hammer Hunters and now its shooting bug holes at 100 yards. I haven't had a chance to stretch it out yet but will soon. I just got some more for my 6.5 gap that I cant wait to try out.

What load combo / speed in the 7WSm with 143 Hammer??
