H4350 and R23 for short magnums?

I lean towards RL-17 with the short magnums.

Two 338 RCMs:

22 inch SA sporter with 225 gr accubonds fed 210, 61 gr of RL-17 vel 2750 OAL 2.980
30 inch LA long throated 338 RCM with fed 210, 300 gr bergers 56 gr of RL-17 vel 2525 OAL 3.225

300 WSM 22 inch sporter A bolt fed 215, 230 gr bergers 61 gr of RL-17 vel 2735 OAL 2.800

-----------------------------------

Did use 4350 with the 300 WSM and fed 215, 125 Nosler BT 72 gr of 4350 vel 3360

So it looks like h4350 and R22 are to fast for the 195 EOL. I had some pretty hard bolt lift when I hit 2904. Altho I don't trust the FPS at all that my prochrono is throwing. It doesn't seem to go over 2904. It said that 3 times in a row with 2 different loads. One was a grain of powder difference so it should have been faster.

One odd thing I do see is that reloader 26 never got the hard bolt lift that h4350 did. Instead, it backflowed primer almost 1/32 if not more back into the firing pin hole. H4350, however, got really stiff bolt lift and slight primer cratering, but not enough I would have called pressure without the presence of other indicators.

Have you tried R26? I'm getting around 2920fps with 195 eol over 59 grains in a 28 inch tube. Accuracy is around .284 inches CTC or less at 100 given that 3 shot groups have all bullets touching each other so that should be under 2 widths (7mm or .284) which is .568 group area if you don't do CTC groups.

I don't mean to sound smug, but I think the gun or me has more work to do before I call it good. I had a shilen select match 308 on it before and I was producing a little better groups at 100 yds. But I had also done some extensive ladder testing and load tuning at 800 yards. Lately I'm always rushed to get shots in before dark so in guessing my shooting ability is pretty degraded when I do that.

CORRECTION - the 160s shoot at about 3,150 ft/sec. The 180s run about 2,900.

H4350 is great for mid weight bullets in short mags, i.e. 180s in 300 wsm. With a 195 7mm I wouldn't expect it to compete with the slower powders in velocity but you might find it very accurate. I'd guess you're very hot to reach 2900+ with it.

I have no doubt some of these new fangled powders and those new enduron powders will be outstandingbut I'm getting too long in the tooth to start over again with all these rifles/cartridges.. Since unloading quite a few odd ball cartridges/rifles I've also cleaned off the bench of all those half cans of powder and other that v-133, 4064, all I have left for everything else else is kegs of H-4350..
