Out of these 2 powders does one of a lower Standard Deviation of velocity than the other?

I am currently working a load with 168grABLR with the H1000 but see Retumbo should gain a little vel. but i heard Retumbo had a greater ESV in other calibers

Any insight?
Thanks
James

I have had better luck with H1000 having lower deveations. Speed hasn't been an issue. usually around 70.5 grains works well with the 168 .025- .030 off lands.gun)

H1000 will provide better ES/SD in the 7RM than retumbo. Retumbo is good for an extra 50-75 fps though.

h1000 seems too slow for a 168gr pill out of a 7rm.

It actually works very well for producing 3000+ fps with single digit ES. Retumbo will get you to 3050-3100 fps, but the ES will likely be around 20-30 fps at best.

According to Hogdon's max load @ the same velocity but w/ 6gr less 4831 and lower pressure. I'm pretty sure h1000 is dirtier than 4831 too. I'd imagine es w/ 4831 is low too being as it is very popular on the shooting line, otherwise it wouldn't be.

But if h1000 and retumbo is all the op has... then I'd agree w/ you.

Exactly^^^^^^

Usually 3035-3045 fps with h1000.

Retumbo definetly has more shot deviation on this load.

If I were to buy one powder for the 7mm RM for extremely capable long range hunting loads with a Berger 168, H1000 would be at the very top of the list. In reviewing the Hodgdon load data, their max load of 71 grains actually produces around 3040 fps in a 26" 7RM. Not 2806 fps.

Every 26" SAAMI spec'd 7RM that I've loaded for produces right around 3025 fps with a 168 on top of 70.7 grains of H1000 in Hornady or Winchester brass primed with a CCI250.

I'm not saying that the 4831s aren't effective. We can agree that they work very well, but H1000 puts the 7RM on the next level.

I whole heartly agree with this^^^^^. I use 215 fed primers is only diff and see around 3035 fps m0st the time with verified downrange clicks.

+1
Also, try different primers. It can make a big difference.

H1000 gives me single digit ES in my 7 mags with velocity in the 3020-3040fps range. Retumbo gave an additional 30fps or so, but the ES averaged a good 25-35fps. I tried everything to make Retumbo work. The only other powder that comes close to H1000 is IMR7828, but I find it much more temp sensitive. Seems like charges in the 70-72grs work for most, but always start lower and work up.... Please. Fed215M is also my primer of choice.

Not to hijack the thread, any experience with power choice for 180 VLD bullets in 7RM?
