H1000 vs Retumbo in 338 LM Results

That is serious power, I'm just starting my rl33 load work. Are you still seating long? Did you load any at mag length with good results? If I load the 300 bergers to max mag length in my gun around 3.75 I have .075 jump.a little more then I was hoping for but might still be doable. Not a huge deal running single shot but more convenient having a mag full. Sometimes I find myself coyote hunting with the 338lm and more then one comes to the call:D did you try any 250g bullets, I prefer those on coyotes. Thanks for the info

Still seating long, havent tried shorter with the rl33, Kirby says the powder like bullets close to the lands. I havent tried any 250 grain bullets. With a 300 grain bullet i dont think .075 will be a huge problem. Try it, let us know what happens! More info the better!

I'm hoping the weather will cooperate this weekend. I'll shoot both long and mag length for accuracy, velocity and pressure with equal charge weights. Report back after. Doubt we'll learn anything new but who knows.

My buddy wanted me to develop aload for him and his 338lm savage 110.. I threw on the magentospeed found found that 91g of retumbo was starting to show signs So i headed to the range with some loads at 89g load. decided to back off 2 grains, because of the colder temp, and didnt want him to Have problems in the summer. i was def impressed with this factory gun. heres a pic at 200, now i will find out which one has a lower es and dial in the load with huskemaw

Sorry so slow getting back to this but I felt the need to post results, might save some people from wasting time and components. I ran similar charges as Riley from 97-101. Jumping .075 with 300 berger's. Velocity was right on track with his results but es was nastiest I've ever seen. 80 fps or more with all loads. Jumping bullets in my lapua and rl33 is a no go. I loaded some h1000 loads the same day from same lot of brass all prepped the same. H1000 gave consistent es under 10fps. I would really like the extra 100+ fps gain from 33 but can't load long enough in my gun with bergers to fit the mag and it doesn't feed single shot worth a dam. I was thinking of trying some 300smk which i can get to the lands and still fit the mag. If that doesn't change my es then I will have 6 pounds of 33 for sale. Luckily I came across 8 pounds of retumbo and 10 pounds of h1000. I'll give 33 a try this afternoon with sierra's and see. Might be some 33 for sale tonite.

Riley,

Your initial testing showed the flattening in the velocity curve, which should show the best accuracy with each given powder. My own testing showed similar results with IMR-4350 (very slow 2500 fps), H-1000 and RL-33, although I was using a 300 SMK in a Sako TRG-42, which seems to have a slow barrel I think do in part to the chrome lining? But great accuracy with all powders and RL-33 showing the best results.

My gun seem to shot best at only 2600 FPS, which is where the load I used ended up.

94.5 RL-33 F215M Lapua Brass @ 2.9250" CBTO which feed will through the magazine box and are .0275"-.030" off the lands.

97.0 grain did get me to 2700 FPS but the node was 100 FPS lower.

FWIW rl33 has been doing great things in my 338 edge. Velocity is just shy of 3000fps and the temp stability has been surprisingly good. I've shot it from 70 degrees to single digits.

Reviving this thread, i got my Lapua back from savage on friday. I sent it in as i was having problems with it and believed the barrel was at fault. Savage replaced the barrel but for some reason thought a muzzle cap would be better than a brake... I coated the bore in WS2 (tungsten disulfide) and coated the 300gr Berger OTM with it. I loaded a ladder with RL33 from 96-102 grains with .004" jam.
Results:
96: 2704 fps
97: 2698 fps
98: 2724 fps
99: 2738 fps
100: 2748 fps
101: 2791 fps
102: 2788 fps just started to flatten primers

I realized i wouldnt be able to pressure out at this jam length because 100 grains was 100% case fill. So i then jammed them .020" in the lands and loaded 102-104 grains.
Results:
102: 2828 fps
103: 2831 fps slightly heavier bolt lift, very light "half moon" ejecotr mark
104: 2876 fps much heavier bolt lift, slight ejector mark. MAX!!

Once i get a brake back from savage (or i make my own) i will do some accuracy testing. At the moment i think i will try 102 grains at .020" jam. I hope to see some advantages with the use of WS2 in the long run.

Take care and God bless.
Riley

lots of help for me here. im just starting my lapua reloading process. BUT ive never reloaded on my own before. or from complete scratch. i have retumbo powder to start with mostly because that's what my local shop had. i gonna try the 300 gr smk and noslers 300gr accubond as well. hopefully my head doesn't explode with the thought process
