With all this discussion of 338's, I've gotta toss in a monkey wrench....how about 7saum? it will send the 180bergers at 2900 out of a 26" barrel. If you went with a 28 or 30" barrel, you could probably get darn close to 3000fps.

Hay my thread is going again. Lots of great ideas, I love the 338 ideas. This thread was started before the introduction of bergers new 30 cal offerings. I think the only way to get more power out of the SA is to use a case with a larger diamiter than the wsm.

After reading all the 338 WSM data people posted here I am very glad I made a 338 RCM instead.
Results are almost identical.

225 accubond from 22" barrel and RL-17 2750fps

By "most powerful" are you referring to raw energy, raw speed, or does this badass have to be top of the line in BOTH qualifications?

Well if your looking for any random idea, put this to thought, with Matrix making a .277" cal 165 vld with a claimed J4 jacket that would make its design practically identical to a Berger hunting vld and matrix claims a .650 G1 bc, with that put in a 7mm wsm necked down, 40* improved case and a stiff charge of H1000 or similar should get 3200+ fps from a 26-28" barrel and could be loaded to 2.995" oal. Its bc is right there with a 7mm 180 berger and has less drag. Run the numbers with that and you may be shocked, they are easily getting 3150fps in 26" barreled 270wbys and the 7mm wsm has about a 1.5grn powder capacity over the 270wby in its standard 35* configuration. Then again if you are like me and do not like the 27 cals then id consider the same configuration in 6.5mm, but it would not be barrel friendly.

I dont know what either of them are, but I"m assuming we can get more foot pounds out of larger diamiter bullets.

I just read the whole thread over, as it was more than a year old. I guess what I was looking at when I first started the thread was a SA round that would operate as a repeter. I chose the WSM bolt face as thats what I had, however I would not be apposed to thinking outside the box. Like using a .585 bolt face and basing the round off of a 338 lapua or 470 nitro something like that, again just throwing out ideas.

Well it seems that the short action mags are pretty limited in case capacity compared to all of the "mega-mags" that use the long mag cases. Without getting into custom-made brass of specific dimensions, I'd start with the 325 WSM.

Then one has to decide between necking it down to speed it up, or necking it up to something akin to a wrecking ball impact on game.

One could argue that with today's laser rangefinders, the need for an ultra-fast cartridge is arguable. If that's your stance, then I'd neck it up to 338 and use Berger's 300gr Hybrid with a BC of .818 and a "guessed" SD of .375. This will give you a muzzle energy of approx. 4856 ft/lbs if MV is 2700. All the way out to 1000, you still have 1996 ft/lbs to whack critters with.

Personally, I'd say that's getting 'er done in a short mag!

You are not going to get those numbers with the 325WSM. I shoot 200 nabs @ 2825. My 338 Norma, which has considerable more capacity shoots the 300 gen2 @ 2725, h20 capcity is 107 grs. I believe in Norma

The theoretical example above was written with the idea that the 325 WSM was necked up to 338. So the powder capacity would increase slightly.

Personally, I couldn't find any solid info on anyone who'd actually built one. So I ran some numbers through a calculator and that's what I ended up with.

To my best guess, the MV of 2700 with that big Berger bullet was pretty optimistic....lol.

But hey, who said barrel length had to be under 36 inches?

For what it is worth I built a long throated 338 RCM and shoot the 300 gr Berger Hybrids. Using 57 grs of RL-17 and a 29" barrel the bullet is leaving the muzzle at 2575 fps. The bullet is seated with the base even with the shoulder neck junction making it too long for a SA magazine. It is a repeater in a LA. Just added this as a reference.

I would imagine a WSM might get about the same or a bit less velocity with the 300 gr hybrid seated to fit and feed from a SA magazine.
