If you were to pick a all around caliber for deer and elf which would it be??

6.5creed is mediocre at best for elk. Don't listen to people who say it's great. Yes anything placed in the boiler room will take down your animal, but why take the risk? 28 nosler out of the two is an easy choice in my opinion, unless cost of ammo is a concern.

I say shoot for the middle and do a 6.5 PRC and load some 147, or 156 grain bullets. Great on deer and pretty good for the occasional elk.

Not well suited for deer especially if you want to eat them.

If you shoot behind the shoulder crease what meat will you damage? I guess I've never eaten deer ribs.

Ammo price isnt any different than other premium ammo. We bought Nosler 175 box ammo for the brass at under $40 a box on midwayusa.

Thinking about this forum and all the issues that come up regarding cartridge, bullet, powder, brass, primer, barrel, stock, trigger and optics, it is all just personal preference, following the trend, or trying something new just for the fun of it. For hunting, if you are deviating from a 30-06 with a 3x9 scope, it has to be for the fun of it. The '06 will kill everything from cat squirrels to elephants and hit to 1,000yds for the target shooters. I like to shoot the monster rounds and all the way down to the 22 LR. A new Winchester Model 70 Safari model in 30-06 is hard to beat if you could only have one gun. BUT I am going to hunt White Tails with my 375 RUM this year: just for the fun of it.

The 28 Nosler CAN be a barrel burner IF you ABUSE it. I have 150 rounds through a 28 Nosler Benchmark barrel and still seating at the same depth as after the first 25 rounds. It only grew .002 in those rounds. I only shoot one round, let the barrel completely cool, then shoot another. Never shoot two in a row. Any large powder load through a small hole can be a barrel burner. Owned the 26 Nosler and it can suffer from abuse also. Having said that, don't believe the internet bovine fecal matter from anyone that hasn't owned either a 26 or 28 Nosler.

Ah, the 30-06 and its siblings: mighty fine. The 35 Whelen is a great one often overlooked. I have a 358 Winchester. 10 deer this year (managed lease). 358 is a great one and the 35 Whelen is just MORE! If you reload, the brass for either is basically free as 308 and 30-06 brass is laying around every range.

Why do posts like this show up so often on a long range hunting forum?

While this forum is listed as a Long Range Forum there is much more here to consider than kill shot over 600 yds. I would guess that 600 to 1000yds covers the long range aspect of shooting. More than 1000yds is extreme range with greater possibility of injuring a trophy than a clean kill. So while some in the forum heap praise on new cartridges some shooters still prefer the old cartridges. Sure, you can kill with a 6.5 Creedmore but far off on a windy day a 300WM, 338WM, 375 RUM and others will give you better performance in the wind and with superior energy for that 1000yd kill. I would close with the idea that this forum is rich with information for the shooters of every stripe.

What a dumb response. Capitan obvious. I was specifically speaking about the 35 Whelen being touted as a better choice than 28 Nosler.

I think the 28N is very close to a perfect cartridge. We have loaded quite a few of them. Depending on the barrel twist we have loaded them with 131g Hammer Hunters up to 169g Hammer Hunters. The most common that we load is the 143g Hammer Hunter at about 3600 fsp with N570. This is one of my most favorite combos. A legit 1000y elk round with a near 500y point blank range capability. Just think about being able to hold hair to 500y and then work your dial ups after 500y. How cool is that?!? Lets say that the barrel life is 600 rounds. I think it is much higher than that for a hunting rifle, but we will use 600 for arguing. If a guy shoots 25 shots per year in his hunting rifle that means this hunting rifle would last 24 years before needing to be re-barreled. For an awful lot of us that is long enough that it will be passed down to the next generation.

Barrel burners are far too often over looked because of internet lore. Get the rocket sled and treat it right for a lifetime of fantastic hunting.
