I have a Ruger 77R that is about 40 years old. It went through Katrina in my gunsafe, soaking in brackish water and the bore looks like h*ll. I would like to have it rebarreled. It is chambered in .270 Win, and for simplicity would like to keep it in that caliber. Can anyone recommend a gunsmith that might specialize in the Ruger 77? Not looking for a 1/2 inch rifle, but something more respectable than the 4 moa groups it shoots now.

Are you looking for a gunsmith near you that you are willing to drive to (how far) or are you shipping it?

@Alibiiv

I would REALLY like to find one local, 4 hour drive or so is acceptable. However if I had to ship it to someone that specializes in the Ruger 77, I could do that also.

edited to add: even a 6 hour drive would probably be cheaper than shipping and insurance, but bottom line is someone familiar with the 77 would be optimal-Thanks for your help

Any competent gunsmith that does barrel work should be able to help you. There is no mystique to the Ruger 77, or any other make of receiver for that matter. A simple re-barrel should not require a "specialist". Any gunsmith that is worth his "salt" should be able to do the work that you want. "It's not rocket science or brain surgery". It's simple mechanics, math and refined machining techniques that a gunsmith (that does custom barrel work) uses. It completely boggles my mind to think that it would take a "specialist" to custom fit and chamber a custom made barrel blank to a Ruger 77 (or MK2), Winchester, Howa, Remington, Mauser, CZ, Springfield or 1917/P14 'Enfield', (or any other model for that matter). The only 'hang-up' for a competent 'smith would be if his lathe is not metric thread capable,,,,, and the Ruger 77 uses a simple 1" x 16TPI US thread. Competence is what you should look for, not necessarily a "specialist" for whatever action.

For what your wanting I would strip it down to barreled action save yourself the drive time and fedex it to er Shaw. I've had them rebarrel a few for me and they have done a great job and are priced fair. I do t use them I. My high end stuff but for fun stuff I do and they always shoot better than they should for the price. It was a very easy process also.

I've had a couple of 6.5's and a .35 that they rebarreled and which shot very well. The 35 was sub .5", and one 6.5-06 shot in the .2's On the other hand I tried 6mm (6mm Rem/244) with them twice and neither shot. So they are hit or miss. The only thing I can say for sure is that I personally wouldn't try another 6mm with them.

Nothing wrong with Shaw but I would step it up a notch and go with Douglas premium stainless air gauged barrel . The turn around time is less than 30 days my guess around 500.00 bucks

I would highly recommend a hand lapped barrel (Shaw is not!), like Shilen, Hart, Benchmark, Brux, or the like. There are many excellent custom barrel makers today. Buy quality made and 'cry' once. Buy a "cheap-O" and you may be disappointed.
Just did a barrel job with Douglas 25-284 shoots .5 moa all day long turn around 3 weeks versus 6 months too a yr from Bartlien my previous 6.5 prc build accuracy the same cut rifling versus button air gaged can't tell the difference

He did say he didn't need a .5moa that's why I recommend Shaw. My 6x45 shot way better than it was expected. They also did a 6.( creed and shoots great also. Both are .75 moa or better if I do my part.
I do step up for most of my rifles but if I never plan to stretch the legs out I'll gladly give Shaw more work.
If I want a really great rifle I use many of the other listed ones.

Next one I'm thinking of having them do is a .358 norma just because my uncle has one and I think it's a neat rilfe.
am I reading that right, that they charge 395 plus shipping to install, crown and chamber a standa
am I reading that right, that they charge 395 plus shipping to install, crown and chamber a standard barrel?
That sounds about wright ,it will be a little more for stainless and air gaged give them a call they have been around a long time they use too be the go too barrel for custom rifles hope it works out for you if your going back too the 270 you might consider a faster twist than the standard 1-10 especially if you hand load mono bullets there is plenty on this site that can give you some input on a fast twist 270
