GUN WEIGHT

I see the results are published in two book volumes. Have you read them or are you just citing summaries from others?

Edit: I ask because this subject gets beaten to death on virtually every platform. In my estimation the "science" reveals one conclusion or another, but neither has a functional real world effect on the average hunter's ability to deliver on accurate kills. That's what we are actually talking about here. What it does support is for every hunter to test his own set up and decide how he will work with whatever idiosyncrasies it represents.
Yep read them, and tested a lot of barrels. You don't see any guys that shoot fast strings with Fluted Barrels, all solid Steel or Carbon. Especially the PRS scene, I agree, test what works for you.

True mountain hunters dont care about weight. They know what they need in order to be successful.
One of the best, if not the best mountain hunter out there right now takes a swarovski btx with a 115 mm objective on his sheep hunts
I may not be 'the best mountain hunter', but are you saying that if I
1. Put camp on my back and hump into the mountains.
2. Legally locate and kill game.
3. Pack camp and game back out of the mountains.
4. Care about how much my pack in weighs.
That I am not a TRUE mountain hunter?
Interesting.
I thought maybe I wasn't when it took me so many trips to get meat out, but I thought that was just because I wasn't a true mountain man. Turns out I am not a true mountain hunter either. Oh well.

I just got my 18in 300 wsm barrel from carbon six. When I took it out of box it felt very heavy it weighs 2.5 pounds. Defiance action ag sportsman stock the gun weighs 5lb 15oz Has anybody weighed a barrel one to compare-does this seem heavy ??
Back on topic for the OP. That does not seem heavy. It does sound punishing though. And difficult to shoot accurately.

Your saying that 1.5 lbs is going to be the end of the world?
Its not

I get that. It's not the point at all. I am saying if you can lighten a noticeable percentage of everything you pack shooting solution included, it can make a substantial difference. No one piece of gear, or pound of weight is the end of the world. It did not make nearly the difference years ago, but after leaving 50 well behind it matters more and more. I do a couple hunts a year that are just me walking away from a truck alone till I fill a tag or the season is over and especially the late season hunts with cold weather gear I do need to pay attention to every piece I carry.

I'm with you and couldnt agree more. Guys who think they know what's best for you don't get it. Like the idea of "weight doesn't matter" for a backcountry hunter?? That idea hasnt worked out for any backcountry hunter ever. Weight is the deciding factor for every backcountry hunt. You've got got to be kidding right. Ignorance truly is bliss. We shave weight EVERYWHERE possible. If you don't plan your hunts based on calorie intake you have little room at the table to tell anyone how much weight you think their systems should be.

If weight didn't matter we'd be packing beers, steaks and wall tents instead of counting calories.

I have a 32" Savage magnum profile fluted like their factories and a 30" magnum profile carbon barrel. The 30" is only 12 it's lighter. Choosing a lighter profile before it's wrapped is where the difference is in weight (if there's a choice based on makers). BSF barrels are WAY lighter than any others on the market per same length.

If you chose "bull" profile then it's going to be heavy for a carbon. I have a BSF ar6.5creed barrel, but don't remember the weight (their site gives estimates). The 1 is have from them is fluted under the sleeve (theirs isn't a wrap).

Light barrels, heavy barrels, heat dissipation, mountain men, blah, blah...run what ya brung...if it sucks, figure it out next year.

Been down the ultra light rifle road and personally, for me, there is a difference in shootability for longer ranges. Ounces do equal pain, but again, run what ya brung, if it sucks, figure it out next year.

Glad to live in 'Merica

Your dreaming. I think you watch too much meateater...
The weight you save from going from a 8.5 lb rifle to a 6 lb rifle will not make up for what you lose in shootabilty.
Same goes for your optics. If you can find more animals with something a little bigger or heavier. You take it.
Otherwise your chances of going on a nature hike vs a hunting trip are dramatically increased
