I have a few friends that are official hell divers. I'm happy and content with unofficial.I have a buddy who was a little more adventurous than myself his group of friends used to go deep diving and if I remember around 200 feet, but they were breathing tri-mix and you had to fill a vial with sand to prove you made it to the bottom!

Nuckin futts is the only way to describe it. Imagine 20lbs of weight, no BC, no neoprene , on compressed air, at 200', with a triple digit AJ on shaft.
He "climbs down the platform leg, shoots his fish, and climbs back up.
Wearing blue jeans and a flannel shirt. Those guys are cut from a different cloth.
Yea.NOT ME!
I grew up in Tarpon Springs in early seventies and it was second to none for grouper, hog fish, snapper, snook, blue crabs, etc. Did not have to go out far. Like you said "good ole days".The grouper that were speared was on the gulf coast off of Hudson Florida in about 60 feet of water
It's been too long I'm not sure about the distance but I definitely remember the depth. If I had to take a guess I don't know 15 miles to get to 60 foot.I grew up in Tarpon Springs in early seventies and it was second to none for grouper, hog fish, snapper, snook, blue crabs, etc. Did not have to go out far. I came back from walkers one time I crossed with two other friends and their boats, within sight of home shore I nailed it. I was going about 50 I hauled ash through the entire intercoastal waterway to my friends house that was on my boat and docked at his house we went inside rested And looked out in the river and there were sheriffs boats looking for us. I guess they thought we were smugglers making a run back in . Back then all you needed Was your drivers license to clear customs at Walker's cay.this reminds me of another story.
There's a place called "the loop" off the Louisiana coast. My rednekkid self had no idea. My coonass friend said " don't go thru the loop son unless you haul *** the whole way" ( typed in my best Cajun accent).
Almost exactly half way through it, my buddies get wide eyed as they see a navy destroyer gaining on us. And I'm running 60mph. When they shut us down, there were 3 belt fed 50s trained on us. Took pics and did facial recog to rule out terrorists.
Haven't been back to "the loop" since.
Close. Maybe a few more miles but great bottom not far. Hudson is 15 miles north of Tarpon. Glad you got to enjoy what's no longer there. It's been too long I'm not sure about the distance but I definitely remember the depth. If I had to take a guess I don't know 15 miles to get to 60 foot.
We had a great time fishing two boats I believe six people total miles and myself are the only two divers .well after fishing and several people dropping a few grouper, the bite shut down, and they were ready to leave miles and I said hold on a minute we dropped down and shot the ones in the picture.Close. Sorry, those highjinks aren't for me - and I'm one of the few Los Angeles County Fire Dept-certified SSR Divers you'll ever run across (certificate #68) from back in the '70's.Yea.
