For my brother what caliber

How does one reconcile a muzzle brake with hunting where folks frequently keep their ears free of protection to better hear game movement?

I'm just an Alaska born bush baby , the closer I am to something or the closer it is to me , I prefer the bullet diam. to be bigger . Oregon is brushy and thick , those little black things get real close to you over here and they don't care if you know it , I had one in some scotch brush 15 feet above my head once , breathing heavy acting tough , my hand was on my colt 45 black Hawk

Love this type of topic. My uncle and cousin would almost get into fist fights over it. My uncle owned a hunting ranch in TX, and all he ever used was a 30-06. My good friend (former Rhodesian SAS), used to hunt everything in Africa with an old British .303, but now he's "moved up" to a 30-06. It's a great general purpose round, as is the .270. The person above mentioned the 7mm-08, and ya know that is a GREAT white tail round. I've actually pushed all of my big calibers down to 6.5 Grendel (if I can hunt with an AR), and 6.5 Creedmore. .308 is good....with the right (lighter) bullet. I used some 175's years back on a white tail, didn't hit the right spot, and ended up hitting it 3 times, felt really bad about it. I used 7mm Mag for over 25 years as my GP round, but now realize...that unless I'm reaching out past 300 meters, the light calibers get the job done without waking up the entire county when I let a round loose.

Does your brother reload? That opens up more options. But Caliber isn't as straight forward without some other information.

But considering the following:
- The 270, 30-06 or 260Rem in Bolt Action is hard to beat... tried and true for Deer all the way up to Elk and Black Bear.
- Recoil Sensitive, then 6.5cm, 243Win, 7mm-08 or a 308Win.
- In AR-15 Platform, the 6.5 Grendel, 6.8SPC or 350Legend.
- If he loves Lever Action, then there is the 30-30. Which has possibly bagged more deer (and maybe small Black Bear) than any other caliber today. With the new bullet designs, its gets help to go a little faster with impressive expansion. If not recoil sensitive, then the 35Rem or 45-70 Gov.

.30-06 is a good hunting round for just about everything up to elk. Ammo is available, not overpopular where you can't find ammo, and has ability to shoot light or heavy bullets. It also retains more energy down range that the .308 given slightly higher velocities. I have a used, pretty much new, .30-06 winchester model 70 featherweight ($899 at cabelas) that I'm selling for $650. It does include a picatinny rail on top so all that's needed would be a scope and rings. Shoot me a message if your interested.

If he's touchy about recoil on any of these, take him out for some porterhouse steaks and get him to man'up.


My 7mm-08 recoils more than my 7 mag did.

Hello all I'm asking this to better help my brother he is looking to buy his first rifle which will be for huntin white tail and maybe bear if hes able.hes not sure what caliber or rifle to go with and what I've recommended to him hes not sure on yet.hes looking at couple different rifles but he is on a tight budget of 500 just for rife but me and my dad will help with little more cash if he finds something he really wants.the caliber he is most interested in is different 6.5 cal,,270 win and maybe 308.he has shot and hunted with either my dads 308 or 30-06,270 or 50 cal muzzleloader.he wants to have his own rifle he is 17 right now and I'm not sure how he is on recoil any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

Lots of good "can't go wrong" calibers. .279, 6.5/284, 7/08, 25/06......on and on!

While I've agreed with most of the posts; especially those which encourage use of the 7:08; I've been struck by the omission of the 260 as a real option. It is often overlooked in the attention given to the Creedmore's and PRC's. The 260 is a fine caliber with great ballistics and minimum recoil. It's the 250 Savage of the 264 caliber community. Just sayin'

He doesn't reload yet but after him and my dad talking and watching me reload they want to start reloading.and he likes bolt guns an ARs but he wants a bolt gun first

I'd agree with the 6.5 Creedmoor except for the bear option. I own two 6.5 Creedmoors and think it is an amazing round that is here to stay. Perfect for deer and antelope and crazy accurate. But, big game needs big bullets. For me, elk and moose meet my 300 Win Mag. Bears get the 375 H&H. If I'm going up against something that can eat me, I want at least a 30 caliber. 308 or 30-06 would handle a black bear and have probably killed more elk than any of the magnums. The big Alaska bears see nothing less than the 375 H&H in my hands.. Bad shot placement you're asking for trouble either way, but when it starts chasing you, I'd rather throw some weight and energy his direction.

I'm A Die Hard 270 win fan for Deer in general , However I would say the 06 is a great all around caliber that will serve all his hunting Needs ! Especially if he will only Own one Rifle !
