My story-
So I posted the .270 win thread here and it blew up. That got me shopping for a rifle. I have a safe full of off the shelf rifles. I have dreamed about building a full custom for years. I don't know why but I just never did it.
All the uncertainty kept me from it I guess.
So I was thinking, I could thin the safe and probably come up with more than enough cash to build a rifle. I could sell 4-5 rifles with optics and ammo and have plenty to build on.
Now I'm here thinking about this again. I definitely want something lightweight, short, and handy. I think I want to build a .300 WSM or .270 WSM. Something I can source components and off the shelf ammo for. I own a Wildcat and while I can reload and probably will I don't want to "have" to.
That would be the norm; you know what they say about opinions (Dirty Harry). Building your first custom rifle is exciting. Before jumping into complete custom rifles, I did semi-customs, most DIY budget builds. I do not have a .270 WSM (I have .270 Win and AI), but I have two .300 WSM (24" and 26" barrels) is an excellent chambering choice.
Here is what I'm thinking-
Pierce lightweight action, proof 20inch light Sendero, Manners EH4 stock. Probably a Zeiss optic.
Anyone have advice?
Is this a mistake?
Is there a smith you would recommend? Maybe a cartridge recommendation I haven't considered?
The beauty of building a custom rifle is picking and choosing your component. It's your build; it's your choice. Do not worry about what others think. This is one of the reasons I never ask what rifle to build or buy; I share when it is said and done. But that's just me. Yes. I do extension research on my own.
Is this a mistake? No, I do not think so. The key is to define your intended purpose and your personal preference. If your choice of SA meets your requirements, go for it. Like
@Rick Richard, I, too, prefer LA over SA. The WSM at the 3.2"+ COAL is bad arse.
Is there a smith you would recommend? I am fortunate to have access to many reputable gunsmiths. I have at least 10 within an hour's drive, one of which is 2 miles from my house. I have been working with my go-to GS for 20 years now, and I have been very pleased with all his work. Establishing a good working relationship with your gunsmith is part of the fun.
My GS is only a 20-minute drive away, and I occasionally visit him to see how he is doing with my rifle build. Do you have GS in your local area/distance you are willing to drive to, or do you plan on shipping it to a GS?
a cartridge recommendation I haven't considered? Start with what you have and determine if there is a void/chambering gap you are trying to fill
.
Good luck and enjoy!
