FINALLY got a rifle to learn LR shooting with

This will depend on the scope objective outer diameter and base height. First or second focal plane scopes can also make a difference.

NF 5.5-22x50, SFP+ NF 20 MOA Long action base=NF Ultra lite LOW rings.

Bushnell HDMR, FFP + 20 MOA short action base =Hawkins MED rings. I have to go higher as the back of the scope power setting almost touches the back of the base and the front bell contacts the front of the base on any Long action bases.

All that said, if SFP scope, I think it is a little more forgiving.

On that Rem Long Range I think you could get away with LOWs from just about anyone if using a 20 MOA base, but best to check their website. What ever you do, do not ask Talley for advice, they are clueless.

IF you have a 30 mm scope tube, these might fit the bill. Check Hawkins site first though.

It's a Remington 700 Long Range in .300 RUM. This is one that was suggested when I asked awhile back. For now I'm going to swap my Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x50 onto it, but plan to get something better. The fella I got it from said it shoots the 220 ELD-X into a 1/2" at 100.

So, am I on the right track ? Suggestions for what to do next? Should I get a 20 moa base 1-piece with rings, or do a Weaver mount and rings separate?

Thanks

What a beauty - and now: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

So yes, you are on right path! Yes, get a 10 or 20 MOA rail and a very decent scope with turrets. You are suggesting this is for long range so lots of scope adjustment will be needed. Not sure I saw the twist of your barrel. My 300 RUM loves 200 grain Accubond. My barrel is 1:10 twist. I tried 225s but it open the group slightly. Still under MOA good luck and shoot em up

If you really want to learn long range shooting. Get a good bolt action 22LR and a lot of ammo. The 22 LR at 200 yds is like shooting a 308 at 1000 yds. The 22LR is unforgiving and will tell on you if you mess up like flinching or your NPA is off. It will also teach you how to read wind.

ALMOST Any Caliber will work for LR shooting the BIG key is have a GUN with Weight to it , seems everyone is going to this Feather weight gun Idea. sure it's great for walking but when it comes to shooting you want weight so you're not bouncing the barrel around when you are looking for that target and that hold true for even the best bench rest. yea a heavy gun is hard to hold up sometimes but once you learn to shoot it you won't be holding it for more than a few seconds while you find your target and pull the trigger

My buddy has that exact gun. It shoots very well. I worked up a load for him with H1000 and 215s. Great shooter.

I would get a 20 or 30moa rail and rings. And see about getting a muzzle brake installed.
I agree with the muzzlebreak idea for sure. Even the most manly will be feeling that at the end of a long session!!!
