One thing that hasn't been said and probably should be is this.
Have some flexibility in your choices of caliber and cruise the classifieds here at LRH. I've picked up some very reasonable deals on very nice rifles here over the years.
I've also worked out a fool proof system that I use if you are the least bit nervous about doing business with people you don't know.
Just go through an FFL dealer on the seller's end. Ship the case with payment to the FFL to be turned over to the buyer upon presentation and inspection of the rifle for shipping and insist on having it fully insured. You can also take the extra step of Paying for the shipping yourself listing yourself as the shipper (From the FFL's address) to your FFL's address and that way if there is a need for a claim to be filed you as the shipper are paid directly by Fed Ex or UPS for the loss.
