ELDX Performance on elk

My neighbor has killed 11 elk with the 143 eld x. They are 150-500. I bow hunt big game so my kills come from someone using my rifle or a client on a hunt. All good kills so far.

ME- I've killed quite a few wolves in close with a 147, 135.... not much different than a 143 from what I can tell. Iv'e killed several from 50ft-100 yards and all fur friendly so far. The 135A tip kill was 38 yards. Small 1.5" exit and never took a step. That was out of a PRC with mv at 3100. Guessing still around 3000 at impact.
My only kill with a 147 eldm was on a yote and the exit was at least a 6 inch circle. Hit him like a freight train at about 60 yards

Can happen. Killed 15 wolves and piles of yotes with my 6.5's. A yote and a wolf seem to take hits differently tho. None of the wolves had significant damage, nothing worth me making a change over that's for sure.

Wife killed her first elk last year in CO. 212 ELD-X from my 30-28 nosler at 670 yards and it folded the elk in half. Great bullet. Shot was rear lungs. Everything around it was goo. They seem to show pressure signs a little quicker than the 215 hybrids. I assume due to the longer bearing surface.

Have you necked up a 28 nosler case to 30cal?!

There's some eld-x on pages 2,4,5,6 of this thread. Just to note, quite a few eld-ms in there.

I know that this forum is about LRH, but please bear with me on this. I'm hoping to get some firsthand or observed reports on the performance of the ELDX on elk at close range. My elk hunting is mostly in timber and shots will most likely be 100 yards and less. Hornady seems very optimistic on this but there's nothing like "been there, done that".

The older I get the more I like the "easy button".............make life simple and not worry about it and go 200 NPT and call it a day:)

Kind of a good point. It seems the rage is long range bullets and no one wants to mess with old school. For anything inside 300 I'd take a good old nosler partition, Sierra soft point, or corelokt and call it good.

I hear you Brent, only I'd move that range back to 500 give or take:)

Over the last 40 some years we've taken a lot a of elk via Partitions and good old Sierra BT's. Frankly, killing is incredibly easy and not near the rocket science most try to make it out to be...

I have shot a lot of 175 Grain ELD-X bullets in my 7mmLRM for Deer, Antelope and Elk and they have worked with no issues from 200 to 700. I have to agree with some of the guys on here about the choice of bullet if you are shooting 100 yards or less. I think there are a lot of bullets better suited for this range than the ELD-X. JMO. I would be looking at Nosler Partitions, Barnes TTSX, Hammer Hunters, Swift A-Frames etc. These would be a much better choice for 100 yards or less. Again just my Opinion. Good Luck hunting.......

We've had great luck with the eldxs. From 103s to 230s they seem to do the trick. The wife is shooting the 200gr eldxs in a 300wm with a mv of 3001 and we have recovered 2 just inside the hide on the off side. Prior to that rig she was shooting the 143gr eldx out of a 260rem and that worked for years and years until I made the mistake of letting her use my 300wm. Now we have two of the same rig because she laid claim to the first one...🙄 pictures are of a 200gr on an elk at 306yds shot in the crease. Ill see if I can't find the one from her buck at 567yds also

Extremely low drag- expanding. - bullet designed to shoot far and expand at lower velocity. Translates to a softer bullet to expand well at long range but expands too rapidly at close range. The locking ring is to help stop too quick of expansion.

Bottom line if shots are always close, shoot a bonded bullet or hammers or cutting edge.

Use the right tool for the job. I have probably driven a nail with a monkey wrench before. But if I was building a fence, I would take a hammer 100 times out of a 100.
