Douglas barrel

I have three Douglas SS barrels and have a fourth coming.
I have a Savage with a 243AI with over 1800 rounds and it still shoots in the 2's throat is a little worn. I have another barrel that I switch to and it is in a 220 Swift and it shoots in the 2's. If you are looking for just a good hunting rifle barrel they OK in my book.
If I was building a competitive bench rifle I would not have a Douglas. The finish in the bore is a little rough compared to other manufacturers to begin with. But still alot better than a factory rifle. They have been around a long time.
If I was building from the action up I would opt for a Hart (30cal) or Kreiger. My 2c.

thanks for the info. I am planning to build from a Rem 700 short action with some trigger work but not much else and of course a barreland a custom thumbhole pistol grip stock. I am going to build a 30BR with a 22" barrel for deer, yotes and sage rats. don't really want a bench rest but want good accuracy to maybe 500 yards for yotes.

the savings is probably less than 100.00 compared to hart, shillen, etc. Depends on how much 100.00 means to you. My cousin had a 22-250 in one of there air-gauged barrela shot well. Also a guy name Melvin Forbes from ultra-light arms builds all of his guns on a douglas barrel. There the 5 1/4 lb guns with a scope mounted.

Douglas barrels should more than do what you are asking for IMO.

lewellan, Douglas will be installing their barrel on my 700 long action in the 25-06 for much the same reasons you've outlinde. After much research and a visit to their shop I'm confident I will get a quality barrel with excellent accuracy on a sporter rifle.

That 30br will make a great hunting rifle for sure ,i have a Douglas barrelled -rem. 700 bdl 22-250 built by Micky Coleman .
Micky recommended the douglas XX and it shoots great and cleans up easily .
Mine shoots anything i feed it .

Well i will be the un-popular one here but as far as Douglas goes and i do this for a living mind you!!!! i have never had a bad one and have pulled Pac-Nor barrels that went south on F-Class rifles chambered in .243 after 300 rounds to install a Douglas that in the past has gone 3000 rounds before giving up the ghost. I have also lapped these barrels myself with JB (i know what people say and i don't wana hear it about JB) i use a bronze brush 1 size smaller than the bore and a cotton patch and stroke the barrel 100 times with it careful and marking the dewey rod with tape not to pull out all the way in either direction. clean out all the JB and do the same with Flitz Polish. it works and it works well i have done this to Adams and Bennett barrel too and have a guy shooting one in an F-Class riflegun) 6.5x55 Match first load came in at .327" at 100 yards the Douglas i did this way in .243 came in at the .250" range with the same load his last Douglas barrel shot and lasted 3K rounds the guy said his last barrel did every thing he ever wanted to do except go clean at 600 yards. i have also had the same luck with Shilen but the Douglas barrels run truer in the lathe than the Shilen i have seen the Shilen barrels run as much as .017" out of concentricity from ID to OD Douglas and Adams and Bennett barrels both run way better in the lathe than they do. Krieger, Lilja,Hart etc all good barrels but too pricey for most of my customers.

I have just taken my Remington Model Seven to my gunsmith for barrel change. I changed it to a Douglas #3 contour, 24'' , with a 11 degree crown chambered in .243 WIN can't wait to get it back to post the results.
Glad to hear someone speak good of them that has used them. My 25x284 Ultra lite arms shoot very well. Melvin Forbes only uses them and when i first purchases this gun used i was asking him about them and the guy will get his feelings hurt if you speak bad about them. Douglas was always a pretty good aftermarket barrel, but never a top contender. Then the company changed hands, and the guy that runs the place now is a long range shooter. Barrel quality in the last few years has really advanced to where they are really doing some nice blanks. I've owned three or four thru the years, and all shot and cleaned up very well, but have not had a blank from the new guys that own the place yet (I will)

there was a really good thread awhile back on the Douglas barrels and long range shooting. Might surprise you what they found out. Blanks were straiter and more consistent than virtually all the other big names
The best barrels I've ever been around were from Ron Pence. Better than all the big names I've ever seen (note: never seen a Hart), but getting one takes an act of congress! Kevin Johson used to make a really good long distance barrel, but have not seen one or heard anything about him in years (must have closed up).
