Winchester model 70 featherweight in 257 Roberts: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1023760796

2 days ago I was at the range with my new Browning X-Bolt Speed in 270 WSM. 6.5 pound rifle with a factory radial muzzle brake. I was surprised at how little recoil there was for a light rifle. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1024254563

Start the 270 WSM with a light bullet slightly detuned....and then as he grows, work up in bullet weight and speeds. Just tossing out an option for you....

I actually got x- bolt speed SR in 6.5 a few weeks ago. The shorter barrel makes getting in and out of boxes and general handling so much nicer. It's a soft shooter as well but those who don't like hearing protection will quickly convert after shooting this one as it's LOUD. I may end up giving this one to my youngest as it fits him so well. I had planned on giving it to my oldest son. Know it's looking like I may either get the older one a CA Mesa FFT or get another X-Bolt for him as I can get them very close in price. Unless something pops up here today that is interesting.

Not for sale, but I bought my 12 year old a 270. Put a Limbsaver pad on it and loaded up 110gr Barnes bullets for it. Does not kick at all and is extremely accurate. As he gets a bit older I'll bump him up to 140gr bullets. Something to consider so you aren't buying him a new gun in a few years.

Bought a Remington 788 years ago and out of all the guns iv bought and sold that one is still in the family. My son picked it over all the ones I had and he's still shooting and killing deer today with it. JMHO but I'd look hard at that 788 in the 243.
