Assuming that.....atmospheric conditions are good, he does not get "rattled" prior to the shot, has a good rest, and has pretty good confidence (Not over confident, but not fearful of the shot).....300 yards! memtb

What do you think most folks in Georgia do to "dial in" their deer rifles? Paper plate at 100 yards...if that. Eastern hunters kill far more deer each year than do the long distance western shooters who have to obsess over ballistics and long range shots at various elevations in high winds.

My family's got a place in Arkansas with a real country boy of a neighbor. He is still using a box of "shells" he bought at Walmart years ago. He said that last year he shot with his rusty old 30-06 (which wears a Weaver walmart scope) exactly three times. He puts three deer in the freezer each year. I bet that thing couldn't hit that paper plate at 100yds.

I don't have that luxury out living out west so part of me is envious.

Just sayin...maybe "good enough for hunting" is actually good enough for hunting.

yeah I know...I've been shooting like a prude for so long I get antsy thinking about rifles that don't shoot less than an inch!! Lol

Me too. I had a 308 Savage that just wouldn't shoot under an inch. It was my most expensive base rifle at the time. It got rebarrelled.

Funny enough, it killed several medium game animals. Probably more than any of my "shooters"

Well, I wish we could get 3 or more deer a year Lol. Here we get one deer tag a year and that's if you get drawn, if not then maybe leftover tags in an area you aren't always familiar with.

When you can only get one I guess we have to make sure we have a good accurate load that will work long range (600m max for me) so we can fill that tag. Not only that, our hunts are in public land and we do not have anywhere near the number of deer you guys have. So when we get a chance we have to make it count. If I'm correct and may be qrong but for deer population we have maybe 1 deer for every 5 you have. Again, I wish we could get 3 or more deer tags.

I think its the ammo - we have had nightmare groups with superformance...some worse than others - a rifle that shoots sub moa with federal premium was shooting 8-10" groups with superformance. Have him buy some federal premium or hornady precision hunter and see what it does. I bet you get that gun to sub moa....

@LVJ76 We have 1.35 million deer here in Georgia. It's 12 does and 2 bucks (any size). It's insane. I usually shoot one doe and one buck a year. I'm really starting to limit my bucks too and letting basket racks walk a lot more. I don't know what I would do with 14 deer in the freezer!!

come to ga I'll take you hunting.

Oh dang, I could eat venison all year long Lol. I'm literally a meateater and would be in heaven. My wife not so much except for Venison, she loves it, especially grilled ribs.

One of these days I might take you on that offer.

My nephew is using one of my 7mm-08's next week and I didn't get a chance to reload so he bought some Hornady Superformance and some Hornady American Whitetail. The Superformance shot almost 2" groups @ 100 yds and the American Whitetail just unser 0.6", so hell be using this last one for coues deer.

I've had excellent and terrible luck w Superformance. My 270 throws a flame w 140gr SST SF. Gotta be responsible for some of the inaccuracies

Remington rifles and superformance.... I have never had good luck, even back when they called it (light magnum ) get some federal ammo and 180 grain superformance is over kill for both the shooter and Georgia whitetails.Federal bluebox 180 grain ammo has worked well in every Remington 700 30-06 that I have tried it in sample size of 6, various years of manufacture. This ammo is cheap and it seems to work quite well.Just a thought sometimes just a different brand makes a big difference in factory ammo.

Good advice. I find my old rifles just love Walmart (non-premium) ammo: Remington Core Lokt, Winchester PowerPoint, Federal Power Shok.

Federal Fusions and Hornady Whitetail have performed well too.

And my pocket book loves them. And deer hate them.

You did a good thing.

Plenty for clean deer hunting in Georgia if it's anything like up here in NC. His gun is more precise than it ever had been and he has more practice and confidence. Dead deer.
