Decisions - Choosing between 7-08 or 308

back in the day the 708 beat the Great 308 in the Silhouette competition's, I attended a match once on a range day to help my club, the shooters came from many surrounding states , I was highly impressed with the professionalism of all the competitors it was truly delightful to experience. We're Very fortunate we have choices. Both cartridges are wonderful, yes they make some bullet weights the same go figure, lol . Built two bolt rifles , one in 708 the other in 308 , the 708 was geared towards hunting so 27 inch CM,#3 contour 9 twist Lilja, 308 ,28 inch SS /MTU/Channlyan,1/10 twist geared for target. Roger. There's people chiming in thinking the discussion is focused just on the rounds in general and not focused on those rounds in the AR platform.

I still stand by what I said about normal barrel lengths.

Put those in an AR platform & things change. You just don't get the velocity from typical 18-20" barrels.

info about you ar7-08 please!

i have a McGowen 22" 10t and with certain mags go out to 2.870" for the heavies.

Aero M5 set with Wilson Combat Hunter 18" barrel. TT Diamond, A419 brake.

I had to drill the gas port on barrel. It was really small from WC.

Thats not bad at all, I'm pushing the 139gr SST with IMR4064 at just over 2,800 fps on my 24" Rem 700 SPS.

Identical rifle my wife pushes the 120gr Ballistic Tip at 2,980 also with IMR4064.

Plan is to try Varget, CFE223 and RL17 once I run out of 4064, see if I can get a little more velocity.

These are max pressure loads. "Fire & Forget" brass as the primer pockets are gone, but primers stay put for one shot.

I'm using varget in a 24" with the 120 BT and getting 3050 and it's not a max load.

Darn near the same load, tad less, with a 130g Speer btsp will surely put a smile on your face, also.

Since eerryone else wants to post bolt gun 708AI…162ELDM 2775 24" with 46gr W760. I can hit better at 1600yds better than my 300WM 215 Hybrid some days.
