Screw the PRC.

If I do a 7mm Rem Mag, it's going to have the correct throat/freebore for the 175-180gr bullets. I already have some dummy rounds made up. This is a 180gr Hottenstein seated to where I would want it touching the lands. So the seating depth in the video and by SAAMI standards doesn't really matter to me.Watched a you tube video by Ultimate Reloader on the 7RM vs 7mm PRC. At the 11 minute mark there is a rough cut away of both cases. Gives a good look at the case web difference as well as bullet seating depth.
That's a good point, and if the factory brass was Lapua quality I would do just that. However, I'm hearing stories of the factory ammo being very hot and the brass not lasting more than a couple reloads. Weak brass is one of my pet peeves. I don't like dealing with loose primer pockets in a couple of shots. I don't want to be $3/piece into brass and get 1-2 reloads out of it. I'm just re-evaluating the entire build before it gets too late.If you are truly wanting the PRC, then do it and buy the 60.00 ammo, buy two boxes and enjoy this summer building a load for this fall. Out of all your components you purchased for the build, is 60.00 really the deal breaker?? If it was me and my heart set on the PRC, it would be a no brainer.
I was hoping you'd chime in and share your .264 build; it would be pretty close to what the OP is trying to do in .284.Screw the PRC.

I was going to suggest, you could pull the bullet and dump the powder and create your own load, but if you are dead against using Hornady brass, then do the 7 RM.That's a good point, and if the factory brass was Lapua quality I would do just that. I'm curious Jud. What's the COAL of that round? If I do a 7mm Rem Mag, it's going to have the correct throat/freebore for the 175-180gr bullets. I already have some dummy rounds made up. Yeah I'm liking the looks of that.3.580"
With not wanting to wait for brass, I think a properly throated/twisted 7RM is your answer. I've got a 6.5 PRC and a 300 PRC on order that'll ship any day now so I went smaller - and bigger. Plan to use the 6.5 on anything deer sized and down and the 300 on elk sized and up. I love the 7 PRC concept - haven't shot one - and almost waited for one of those instead. However, demand and supply both seem to be high; who knows when supply will come up with demand. I'd wait for the 7 PRC myself, but as you're a reloader and enjoy tinkering I think a custom 7 RM is brilliant.Yeah I'm liking the looks of that.
I always love that when they take an older cartridge and ham string it to make the "new hotness" look more appealing when in fact its nothing but smoke and mirrors!! A sammi chambered 7 RM is throated pretty decent, but yet the ammo manufacturers wont redo their math and make it better!! On its worst day the 7rem mag runs along side the 7prc with little effort ..If I do a 7mm Rem Mag, it's going to have the correct throat/freebore for the 175-180gr bullets.
