Custom Rifle Cartridge Choice

The reason I ask this question is, I plan to build some custom rifles in the future to shoot and test for a year or so. When I'm done with one, I plan to sell it to a friend or maybe even a forum member. I'll use the money to fund another build and do the same thing. I love custom rifles, but I don't want to have a dozen rifles that sit in the safe and collect dust. So I want to test different cartridges, new stocks, new scopes, and test out cartridges, bullets, powders, etc. I don't plan to profit from any of these, just get my money back and start a new build. I'll probably do 1 maybe 2 a year. What are your guys thoughts?

340 Weatherby. I know the belt will pop the hair tie right off the man-bun for some, but for a hunting round with no worries of ammo components and in the perfect rifle, I just can't imagine better.

I got that suggestion like an hour after posting. I think it will be the way to go. Just need to find the right reamer

May talk with Robert at Alamo Precision Rifles (Dallas area). He and I have talked about it at length a few times and I believe he has the reamer as well.

I had .270 on the list, but If I was going smaller than 30 it was gonna be the .257Bee.

A few members are doing this already. They easily get bored with their build(s), sell them, and fund another project.

ADDED: If you look at the classified ads now, there are at least 6 custom rifles for sale from the same member.

My thoughts? "I" do not want somebody else's dream rifle build. "I" want my own dream rifle build ... but that's just me. Good luck with your plan.

Start with something small and easy to get quality ammo for...223, .243, .270, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win...stay away from obscure wildcats if you're wanting to resale.

I was thinking of a fun subject to discuss. Let's say you have a chance to buy a custom hunting rifle that is broken in, has a load developed for it, and has less than 300 shots on it, what cartridge would you want? This rifle will basically be an all around hunting rifle, capable of shots out to 800+ yards. It will not be fancy or built for a specific role. The rifle will weigh less than 10lbs scoped, have a 26" barrel, muzzlebrake, and built with high quality components. If ammo and reloading components weren't an issue, what chambering would you want? Thanks!

The Alamo Precision Rifles 270 wby I bought here was a great find and I'll just have to live with 0.2MOA with 130 and 140 pills. It gets the job done as far out as I'm comfortable hunting at, though, so I'll hold off complaining about it being 1:10 until I upgrade the operator.

Agreed! You asked for thoughts, and I gave you my honest opinion. If you are doing the gunsmithing yourself, you are also competing with other well-established gun builders. I am not trying to discourage your goal, just trying to give you things to ponder with. If this is your lifelong dream, this LRH community will definitely support your endeavor. Good luck!

My first (and only) shot yesterday with that load at 805 yards. Held my 1 MOA on left edge of circle for wind; 13.5 E from my 200y zero. I have 2 28Ns and one 7STW; much prefer the 28N.
